It can be a long and tedious two-lane drive, but it might not be as exhausting as the alternative, US 93 to the west. The YES, YOU CAN DRIVE INTO THE GRAND CANYON Yes, You CAN Drive Into the Grand Canyon. Post on: September 18, 2016. admin. 0. It may be the best kept secret on old US 66: a side road that takes you to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Such a route would never be allowed on U.S. land, but the territory between Peach Springs and the Colorado River is is part of the Hualapai Indian Reservation. BEARTOOTH HIGHWAY: RED LODGE TO COOKE CITY, US 212 Beartooth Highway: Red Lodge to Cooke City, US 212. When Charles Kuralt says a road is worth driving, you should probably make an effort to see it. When he declares a road to be “the most beautiful drive in America”, you darned well better make sure you get there, sometime in your life. This is, of course, the Beartooth Highway’sclaim to
OLD 4-LANE STRETCH OF OLD ROUTE 66 THROUGH HOOKER CUT This is one of the strangest sections of Old Route 66 — one that left me feeling like the last person on earth, standing on an abandoned road that was built differently than any 4-lane highway I had ever seen, through a place where two lanes would have been excessive. Between Interstate exits 169 and 163, old US 66 mysteriously, and quite unexpectedly, transforms from two lanes tofour. It
CALIFORNIA ROUTE 89 SCENIC DRIVE California Route 89 connects the South Lake Tahoe area with US 395 near the Nevada/California border. From the state line, travel south on US 395 to the southern end of Route 89 (about 3 miles). From South Lake Tahoe, take US 50 south out of town, then stay on Route 89 when the two roads split. Markleeville is located 30 miles south of South STATE GUIDE: ARKANSAS I could have easily spent an entire day, or more, at Petit Jean State Park. The crown jewel of Arkansas’ state park system offers a GALATA, MONTANA: IT'S BASICALLY A GHOST TOWN You could easily speed by the tiny town of Galata, Montana without realizing it’s there. I almost did — but then I glanced back, realized what I was missing, and made a quick u-turn. Galata is, for the most part, a ghost town, unpreserved and mostly unknown, just sitting out there in the middle of Montana, as the decades pass. Galata, Montana is located about 23 miles east of Shelby TWO MEDICINE: BOAT RIDE, HIKE TO TWIN FALLS The Bottom Line. The boat ride across Two Medicine Lake will be the highlight of your visit to the lake. The hike to Twin Falls is relatively easy and pretty, but it lacks the “wow” moments of other Glacier hikes. Arriving earlier in the day could allow you moretime to hike to
LOOKING FOR BEARS AT RUSSIAN RIVER FALLS Looking for Bears at Russian River Falls. If you go to Alaska, you want to see some bears. The 49 th state is a vast wilderness where brown, black, and polar bears thrive. You shouldn’t have too much trouble spotting at least one, or two. But probably what you’d really like, is to bring home some awesome pictures of several bears, scooping
SANDIA MOUNTAINS: HIKE FROM CREST HOUSE TO TRAMSANDIA CREST MAPSANDIA CREST MOUNTAINSANDIA CREST TRAIL MAPSANDIA HEIGHTS TRAMSANDIA MOUNTAIN TRAMSANDIA MOUNTAIN TRAMWAY The Sandia Crest Tramway starts its journey at 6,559 feet above sea level, and ends at 10,378 feet — for a gain of 3,819 feet (or 1,164 meters). The tram makes the 2.7 mile trip in 15 minutes. It was completed in 1966, at a cost of $2 million dollars. Don’t worry, the cables aren’t that old — they were changed in 1997. ROAD TRIP IDEAS! DRIVING ADVENTURES ACROSS AMERICA Don't be intimidated by the idea of a road trip. You can do it because I already did! Preplanned routes take you to see the greatest natural wonders and biggest cities in the USA and Canada. Budget-friendly tips on where to stay, what to photograph, where to hike, and when to go. FERRY RIDE & HIKE AT JENNY LAKE, GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK There is not, perhaps, a more dramatic mountain range in America than the Tetons. The jagged peaks rise abruptly out of the surrounding flat terrain, separating the rolling potato farmland of Idaho from the hills and plains of Wyoming. And thanks to the absence of foothills, you can truly appreciate the majesty of these mountains. The tall range of rocky peaks would only be half as impressive OLD 4-LANE STRETCH OF OLD ROUTE 66 THROUGH HOOKER CUT This is one of the strangest sections of Old Route 66 — one that left me feeling like the last person on earth, standing on an abandoned road that was built differently than any 4-lane highway I had ever seen, through a place where two lanes would have been excessive. Between Interstate exits 169 and 163, old US 66 mysteriously, and quite unexpectedly, transforms from two lanes tofour. It
LAKIES HEAD & GREEN COVE, ALONG THE CABOT On Cape Breton Island’s east side, you’ll find several places to stop and enjoy the scenery, and even take a hike along the rugged coast. All of these places are conveniently located just steps away from the Cabot Trail. You can either enjoy the view from the road or hike out onto the rocks at places like Lakies Head and Green Cove. The Cabot Trail makes a loop around Cape Breton Island THE ROAD TO ANIMAS FORKS GHOST TOWN The ghost town of Animas Forks is an excellent destination, but getting there is at least 40% of the fun. You’ll probably want to be driving a 4-wheel-drive vehicle, or at least something with plenty of ground clearance, for the bumpy ride up a dirt road to this 1800’s mining boomtown. Along the way, you’ll pass relics of mining history and some beautiful mountain scenery. Animas Forks WILLIAMS TO JEROME: PERKINSVILLE ROAD Williams to Jerome: Perkinsville Road. Post on: August 14, 2016. admin. 0. There’s an easy and beautiful route to take from Interstate 40 to the Sedona area: Arizona Route 89A. It’s wonderfully scenic, taking you through Oak Creek Canyon, past towering red rocks. There really is no reason to try to find another route. RED CANYON: FLAMING GORGE RECREATION AREA, CART CREEK South of Flaming Gorge, Route 44 crosses over a plateau that’s quite boring. Just when you think you’ve seen the most dramatic scenery the Gorge has to offer, there’s a turnoff from the main road, leading to Red Canyon. Flaming Gorge Reservoir winds its way through a tall, narrow canyon, on its way through the gorge. It’s the kind of dramatic scene that can’t be done justice with a SANDIA MOUNTAINS: HIKE FROM CREST HOUSE TO TRAM The Sandia Crest Tramway starts its journey at 6,559 feet above sea level, and ends at 10,378 feet — for a gain of 3,819 feet (or 1,164 meters). The tram makes the 2.7 mile trip in 15 minutes. It was completed in 1966, at a cost of $2 million dollars. Don’t worry, the cables aren’t that old — they were changed in 1997. HIKING ON MOUNT HOOD: MAGIC MILE SKYRIDE, TIMBERLINE LODGE A drive up to Timberline Lodge is a highly recommended part of the Mount Hood Scenic Byway. From US 26 at Government Camp, take Timberline Highway up the hill to the end of the road. The end of the Magic Mile Skyride ski lift is located on the far side of the lodge. Signs are confusing and somewhat misleading — just walk up to theentrance to
HIKE TO BLACK ROCKS, PRESQUE ISLE PARK, MARQUETTE Marquette’s version of Central Park isn’t exactly central — it’s north of town and sticks out into Lake Superior. But, for the locals, Presque Isle Park is everything you could want in a nearby recreation destination. And for visitors to Marquette, Presque Isle Park also deserves a visit — even if, like me, you’re just looking to stretch your legs for an hour or two before setting__
