WHITE DWARFS GOING SUPERNOVA DETONATE LIKE A NUCLEAR BOMB A new study published in the Physical Review Letters suggests that the remnant cores of dead average-size stars can explode like a nuclear bomb. Known as white dwarfs, these dense cores are packed with heavy radioactive elements called actinides that can spontaneously undergo nuclear fission – the splitting of atoms. Depending on certain conditions, these cores can eventually undergo MARS MAY HARBOR ALIEN LIFE BENEATH ITS SURFACE, STUDY SUGGESTS A new study published in the journal Astrobiology suggests that the subsurface of Mars may be habitable. In the study, researchers explain that the same chemical reactions supporting microbial life deep beneath the Earth’s surface can occur in the Martian underground. An important component for those reactions is water, and past studies suggest that Mars may be hosting NEW SATELLITE WILL TEST WHETHER MAGNETS CAN BE USED TO New satellite will test whether magnets can be used to collect space debris. The mission to clean up space debris has begun. The world’s first satellite that uses magnets to gather up all of the trash floating around the Earth’s orbit was initially scheduled to launchin Mar. 20.

The study reported that while Mars can be explored and colonized by human astronauts, the Red Planet cannot be terraformed into a habitable state, at least not with our THIS DISTANT PLANET LOST ITS ATMOSPHERE, SO ITS VOLCANOES Scientists thought that GJ 1132 b, a distant exoplanet discovered in 2015, lost its atmosphere. But now it seems that it has formed itself a new one. The gases of this new atmosphere suggest a volcanic origin as well. Scientists at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration‘s (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory made the discovery after examining existing observations of GJ STUDY: ALIEN LIFE MAY EXIST IN 5 KNOWN SOLAR SYSTEMS WITH Researchers have identified five solar systems with multiple stars that may be hosting habitable planets. The researchers found that these so-called multiple star systems can support a stable “habitable zone,” the region around stars where liquid water can exist on planets. “Life is far most likely to evolve on planets located within their system’s habitable zone, just like Earth,” THE NEW SOLAR CYCLE BARES ITS TEETH: POWERFUL SOLAR FLARE The sun unleashed a powerful solar flare after one of its sunspots erupted late Monday, April 19. It released a pulse of X-rays and ultraviolet rays toward Earth, ionizing the top of the atmosphere and causing a shortwave radio blackout over the Pacific Ocean. Mariners and ham radio operators in the area might have noticed unusual propagation conditions SCIENTISTS DISCOVER A “SPACE HURRICANE” ABOVE THE NORTH POLE An international team of scientists has confirmed the existence of “space hurricanes” after analyzing a swirling mass of plasma spotted hundreds of miles above the North Pole. The space hurricane, which was observed by satellites in the Earth’s upper atmosphere, appeared to be raining electrons instead of water. The hurricane spun in an anti-clockwise direction ASTRONOMERS DETECT MYSTERIOUS RADIO SIGNAL COMING FROM Scientists from the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) are investigating a mysterious radio signal emanating from the direction of Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to the solar system. Researchers working on Breakthrough Listen, a project devoted to the search for alien civilizations, detected the signal in April or May this year using the Parkes radio telescope in DAYTIME FIREBALL METEOR GENERATES SONIC BOOM OVER UK AND A rare daytime fireball rippled across the sky above the United Kingdom and France on Saturday, March 20. At 2:50 p.m., the fast-moving rock produced a loud sonic boom that was reportedly heard from southwest England to Wales all the way to northern France. Most people initially thought that the noise came from a fighter jet, butthe
GROUNDBREAKING TELESCOPES HAVE NOW FOUND MORE THAN 100 The doughty Kepler Space Telescope might have finally been put to sleep in October 2018, but its successor is picking up the pace. Working alongside ground-based counterparts, the TESS space observatory has spotted more than 100 new extrasolar planets in just three months. Per the report of the multi-national team of researcherswho conducted the

HAS THE SECOND “ALIEN MEGASTRUCTURE” BEEN FOUND? A recently discovered star is flickering intermittently, almost as if its light is being blocked off by something big – or many somethings – in orbit around it. Some researchers are theorizing that it could be another instance of a star surrounded by an alien megastructure. Discovered during the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea SPACE PROBE RECORDS SATURN “SINGING” TO ITS WEIRDEST MOON Did you know that Saturn “croons” to one of its many moons? And that the moon in question, Enceladus, “sings” back? Now you can listen to their cosmic duet thanks to a recently-released conversion of the plasma oscillations between them, an article in Live Science reported.
