PETITION - SOCIÉTÉ JERSIAISE Town Petition from Merchants, etc. On the 29th March 1871 a petition was raised ( 343 signatures in the day ) in the streets of the town and harbour of St. Helier on behalf of the merchants and seafaring men. The petition was presented to the States by the Constable. There had been a long period of procrastination in States' debates over harbour developments and options for increasing theFIEFS AND SEIGNEURS
Fiefs and their Seigneurs. In the eleventh and twelth century most land in Jersey was held in Feudal tenure with allegiance to the Dukesof Normandy.

The Jersey Merchant Seamen's Benefit Society was created by the States of Jersey in 1835 when the English compulsory levy of sixpence per month from every Merchant Seaman's pay was abolished. The contribution was 71/2d. per month, beginning on July 1 1835. The ship's Master was authorised to collect the contributions by directdeduction from pay.
