MARXISM AND OPPRESSION Marxism and oppression. Marxists are sometimes accussed of being dismissive of oppression, preferring to emphasise the importance of class. Sara Bennett explains why socialists argue for working class unity as the best way to combat, and ultimately abolish, all forms of oppression. In their preface to this book, Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett note that "people usually exaggerate the importance of their own work and we worry about claiming too much". In fact, despite some weaknesses to be discussed below, The Spirit Level is by any criterion a groundbreaking work AUSTERITY BRITAIN, 1945-1951 David Kynaston's history of the period from 1945 to 1951 is full of anecdotes recorded in diaries and letters, and from the Mass Observation archive. It is both the book's strength and its weakness. He says he aims to tell "the story of ordinary citizens as well as ministers and mandarins". Britain was undernourished, dirty andclass-ridden.
