WHAT IS A SKY ISLAND? Each Sky Island is an isolated mountain range separated from other mountains by a vast distance and by surrounding lowlands of a dramatically different environment, resulting in a habitat island such as a forest surrounded by desert or grasslands. In southern Arizona and northern Mexico, many North American ecosystems blend to comprise the unique Sky Island region.
