TEENAGE FUNDRAISER EARNS PARLIAMENTARY PRAISE FOR HALF-MARATHON EFFORT June 4, 2021 | 10.51am Charity fundraiser Brynn Hauxwell was congratulated in Holyrood this week after his latest marathon effort. Brynn, 16, completed 16 half-marathons in May to coincide with his latest birthday and to raise money for Ability Shetland. Conservative MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston raised a motion in the Scottish parliament to highlight Brynn’s achievement. “It’s really inspiring to see young people like Brynn taking on challenges like this and being so successful,” Mr Halcro Johnstonsaid.
“He has every right to be proud of his exceptional performance which must have required a considerable amount of grit and determination. “This certainly wasn’t Brynn’s first challenge, and I doubt it’ll be the last.” Brynn raised more than £1,200 for the charity last month, more than double his initial target of £500.__ 0

DELTING AND WHALSAY PLAYERS GO INTO ISOLATION AFTER POSITIVE TEST June 4, 2021 | 8.51am A player who played in Monday’s match between Delting and Whalsay has tested positive for coronavirus, according to an email sent by NHS Shetland to both clubs. It is believed to be a player in the Whalsay side. Both sets of players have been asked to self-isolate immediately following Thursday night’s update. And they have been told that even if they return a negative test result, they will still have to isolate because they will be treated as a “close contact” of the new case. Shetland Football Association (SFA) president Iain Smith said yesterday that Bressay would not be able to play for two weeks because they faced Whalsay B on Wednesday. But Bressay have since been told that their fixtures and training can go ahead as planned. That will only change if any Bressay players are contacted by track and trace or test positive. The news will increase fears of an outbreak in the isles, particularly as Shetland prepares to enter level zero tomorrow.__ 0

SNEAK PEEK AT SHETLAND FILM ARCHIVE’S LATEST PROJECT May 10, 2021 | 9.57am Never before seen footage of Shetland life in the 1950s and 60s will be premiered this week, after undergoing a specialised digitisationprocess.
Shetland Film Archive (SFA) will present the free, online event showcasing ‘Shetland On Film’ archive clips this Thursday, 13thMay.
The duo of unique films focus on two of the isle’s most important industries – tourism and fishing. The fishing archives, filmed by James Thomason and donated by Janie Thomason, focus on the herring boom of the1950s and will be introduced by Laurie Pottinger, local writer and tourist guide, who will provide context of the industry right up to the present day. Isobel Irvine will introduce the second presentation; a collection of films produced by her father Derek and uncle John, a teacher based in Edinburgh, who would take groups of school children to the isles forsummer holidays.
The footage includes walks down a thriving Commercial Street and going for a dip in Scalloway’s open air pool. The collection also includes footage of the Queen and Prince Philip visiting Shetland in 1960. SFA chairman Greg McCarron, said: “This is from a reel that recently came into our collection that we thought it would be worth showcasing this material in a special event. “We thought that by promoting a live premier we are hoping people are all going to watch it at the same time, and maybe put comments underneath and spark those conversations and discussions which you get in a live screening.” “Shetland on Film” will be premiered on the Shetland Film ArchiveFacebook page and
YouTube channel
at 7pm on
Thursday, 13th May, and will be available for two weeks. It is supported by Film Hub Scotland, part of the BFI’s Film Audience Network, and funded by Screen Scotland and Lottery fundingfrom the BFI.
