FROM THE ARCHIVES – CHECKING THE PULSE OF YOUR CHURCH Guest | Friday, Jun 4, 2021 discuss By Marshall Fant. Republished with permission from _Sowing & Reaping_, Spring/Summer 2018. Is your church a healthy church? If so, how do you know? If not, what should you do about it? By dictionary definition, _health _is “a condition in which someone or something is thriving or doing well.” To know whether a church is thriving or doing well, pastors and church leaders need to be willing to take an honest look at their ministries. Do you have an accurate view of your ministry, and are you willing to ask the right questions to get an honest evaluation of it? Pastor John described his ministry to me as “having a slow leak.” Over the last two or three years, a key family moved away, attendancedecreased,...

GOSPEL TRACTS DON’T WORK: AGREE OR DISAGREE? Guest | Thursday, Jun 3, 2021 4 “I already have one of those,” said the taxi driver when I offered him one of the gospel tracts in my wallet. Since I live in a densely populated Asian city, the odds seemed slim he really had one. To my shock, the driver pulled an identical tract from the console betweenthe seats.
“You gave it to me last time you rode in my taxi.” I did not remember him, but he remembered me and kept my tract. It’s hard to remember taxi drivers when all you see is the back of their heads. About a year later, I was witnessing to another taxi driver, and the same thing occurred. He, too, still had the tract I had given himmonths before.
“Did you read it?” I asked him. “No,” he replied. “Then it won’t be able to help you,” I said, smiling into his rear view mirror. “...Read more
REVIEW OF ‘ECHOES OF SCRIPTURE IN THE GOSPELS’ BY RICHARD HAYS Paul Henebury | Monday, May 31, 2021 1 Review of Richard B. Hays, _Echoes of Scripture in the Gospels_, * Waco, TX: Baylor University Press, 2017, 524 pages, paperback. Richard B. Hays has established himself as one of the foremost NT scholars in the world, based on enduring works like _The Moral Vision of the New Testament_ and _Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul_. He has been at the forefront of the study of such seemingly obtuse but telling elements of the study of the NT as “metalepsis” and “figural interpretation.” Metalepsis in biblical studies is the incorporation and use of the OT in the New, particularly by way of partial allusion, employed in a new context that draws attention to aspects of the larger previouscontext....

WHEN HEROES ABOUNDED Paul J. Scharf | Monday, May 31, 2021 discuss I have always loved Memorial Day. In fact, I celebrate it everySaturday night.
My ritual for the end of the week—normally as I am preparing to speak the next day on Sunday morning—involves watching _Combat!_, “TV’s longest-running World War II drama.”1 When I am at home—or even in a hotel, if I can find it—I watch another adventure featuring the boys from the Company K, Second Platoon right before going to bed. The soldiers represented by Sgt. Saunders and his men were heroes who rescued the world from tyranny in their generation. According to the National World War II Museum, more than 12 million Americans would be engaged in this conflict by 1945, serving in the Army, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard....

SENSING GOD’S GLORY IN THE CHURCH Paul J. Scharf | Friday, May 28, 2021 3 A tradition that was interrupted in 2020 by COVID-19 returned this week as pastors from throughout the Midwest—and farther away—gathered at the First Baptist Church of Rockford, Ill., on Monday for the 18th edition of the Conference on the Church forGod’s Glory.
I feel like I get two Memorial Days when I attend this conference, which is always held on the Monday preceding Memorial Day weekend. This was the second time that I attended the meeting, and exhibited at it, as a church ministries representative for The Friends of IsraelGospel Ministry.
The conference is aimed at church and ministry leaders, and consists almost entirely of full-length messages offered one after another. This year’s speakers included, interestingly enough, three seminary presidents. Those who...Read more
SOCIAL DISCONNECTION: WHY MANY STAY HOME SUNDAY MORNINGS Ed Vasicek | Thursday, May 27, 2021 6 When it comes to church participation, it is tempting to label the unenthused as probably unregenerate. Although this may be the case, it might be that professing believers who have lost the desire to come to church are simply socially anxious, isolated, and fearful of commitment. What I call “socially disconnected.” Some people hate the church because they were raised in church-going abusive or hypocritical families and understandably want nothing to do with the church; some are vocal (or even militant) about this rejection while others console themselves, thinking they love Jesus but not His people. We are right to sympathize with those who thus suffered, but we also need to remember that such excuses will evaporate before the all-knowing Judge of all. To write off all...Read more
OUTRAGED ABOUT OUTRAGE? SOME REFLECTIONS AND CONFESSIONS Aaron Blumer | Tuesday, May 25, 2021 discuss Last Sunday, my son and I visited a nearby Orthodox Presbyterian Church. As a Baptist, I don’t quite fit in there, but then I don’t quite fit in at a lot of Baptist churches either! I’d visited this church before, some years ago, but my son had never worshiped with Presbyterians. So for him it was an educational field trip, and for me it was a chance to catch up a bit with some friends and former students—and worship together. The way this congregation worships is always a blessing to me. Call to worship; lots of Scripture reading; psalms and old, old hymns; time for repentance and confession. A place for everything and everything in its place—which could probably work as a tagline for Reformed Theology in general. That orderliness and...Read more
WHAT IS PENTECOST ABOUT? TylerR | Monday, May 24, 2021 discuss Pentecost is one of those events in the Christian calendar that hasn’t fared so well―so many people don’t know what to do with it! We know what _happened, _but the problem is what it _means_. Like so many discussions involving the Holy Spirit, Pentecost sometimes becomes a list of things that it _doesn’t_ mean: * Whatever else it is, it _can’t _be a fulfillment of Joel’sprophecy.
* The gift of prophecy, the experiences of dreams and visions―it’s all good, but it has _nothing_ to do with us, you see…
* The gift of tongues can’t be _real_ foreign languages; they have to be ecstatic, other-worldly sayings that require an interpreter Presuppositions drive interpretation, shutting out the actual words onthe...
