GRAY'S FERRY TAVERN AND GARDENS For more than a century, the Lower Ferry, or Gray's Ferry was the easiest way to access Philadelphia if you were traveling by land from the South. While there had been a ferry across the Schuylkill River at this location since the late 1600s, brothers George and Robert Gray dramatically improved the crossing when they inherited the land on either side of the Schuylkill in the 1740s. You and your travel mates decided to start at the northernmost point of the trail in Frackville which is in the middle of Pennsylvania’s coal region. You arrive at the trail head at dawn and start yourjourney south.
TIDES AND FLOODS
The lower Schuylkill River is tidal, rising and falling about six feet every day. These tidal waters come from the Delaware Bay some 70 miles downriver. Large areas along the river in South and Southwest Philadelphia originally consisted of marshy beaches, which naturally developed to handle the ebb and flow of these tidal waters (as pictured in the above image from 1858).
