"Cocha Cashu was a paradise, with an absolutely magnificent view of the lake and a set of well-marked forest trials. The accommodation was very simple yet everybody seemed to be comfortable with it. COCHA CASHU BIOLOGICAL STATION The Cocha Cashu Biological Station (CCBS) is a tropical ecology field station located in Manu National Park, in southeastern Peru. It is aimed at top students of 5th and 6th grades of Primary and 1st, 2nd and 4th grades of Secondary of schools inside and outside (buffer zone) MNP. They spend 2 days and 3 nights at the Station, just as researchers do. For these visits we have designed a learning REMEMBERING FRANCIS BOSSUYT Remembering Francis Bossuyt. Francis was born on April 28 th 1969, in Johannesburg, South Africa, where his Belgian parents had emigrated in 1967. Six years later, the family relocated to England where they lived for two years before returning to South Africa. Históricamente han sido muy apreciadas y aprovechadas por pueblos indígenas como recursos alimenticios GIRAFFES ON THE MESA Longtime reticulated giraffe residents Waffles and Dolly moved into a new home in 1962, and their innovative, open exhibit on the mesa was an impressive sight. People thought the giraffes could walk right out, but the moat prevented that. After testing it, Dr. Schroeder and the team discovered that the giraffes stayed away from the moat, since they apparently didn’t like to step down into a BELLE’S LIFE IN A MAN-MADE JUNGLE Belle Benchley not only had a way with animals, she had a way with words, as well. She was initially pushed into public speaking by Dr. Harry, who detested it and was more than happy to turn his speaking engagements over to her. 1938. War Years 1937 - 1946. Belle Benchley enters the busy Zoo Café as guests enjoy a break. The café was built along one side of the Zoo’s main entrance. A cup of coffee was 3 cents. BIG PLANS FOR THE FUTURE As the San Diego Zoo headed into its seventh decade, the country seemed eager to move on from social struggles and economic recession. A shift in attitude led to what some called the “me generation,” when Ronald Reagan was president, “yuppies” sought and achieved financial success, and bigger was definitely better. It was the era of the VCR, the music video, the generation that LATE 1920S ZOO STAFF In the late 1920s, the Zoo only had a staff of about 30 people, most of which gathered for this rare staff photo. After a couple of incidents when keepers had trouble getting to the Zoo from their homes in bad weather or at night, Dr. Harry had a couple of dwellings built on the Zoo grounds so that keepers could be close at hand. Thus, there were families that lived at the Zoo! “ANIMAL KINGDOM” RADIO SHOW In 1947, radio station KSDJ and the San Diego Zoo begin a series of local Tuesday evening radio shows called “Animal Kingdom,” with informal discussions of natural history prompted by questions sent in from listeners. The show was hosted by Brad Harris (standing) and featured three regular participants from the San Diego Zoo: general curator Ken Stott, Jr. (far right), reptile curator SiELEPHANT SEALS
Elephant seals helped the San Diego Zoo get its start, because Dr. Harry could trade them for other animals to build the collection. This role would later be honored with the image of an elephant seal on San Diego Zoo's conservation medal. By the 1960s, the Przewalski's horse was one of the world's rarest mammals, considered extinct in the wild. Efforts to save the species had been initiated in Germany and Prague, and horses were sent to zoos in Europe and the U.S. to establish breeding programs, including the San Diego Zoo. Pere David's deer is an example of a species that would be extinct if it were not for captive breeding. Originally a species native to China, it was extinct in the wild by 1122 B.C., its habitat lost toagriculture.

Elephant seals helped the San Diego Zoo get its start, because Dr. Harry could trade them for other animals to build the collection. This role would later be honored with the image of an elephant seal on San Diego Zoo's conservation medal.FORAGE WAREHOUSE

NEW DIRECTOR AND NEW DIRECTION In 1985, Chuck Bieler stepped down as director, although he continued working with the Zoological Society as an advisor and on a variety of fund-raising and community-relations projects. Stepping into the executive director role was Douglas Myers, who had been general manager of the Wild Animal Park.
