FREE ARTICLES FROM PHILOSOPHY AND THINK While some of us have more free time, others are homeschooling or unable to visit libraries, the Royal Institute, with thanks to the Cambridge University Press, is happy to make a lot of our archive freely available. We asked the editors and their teams (thank you Matthew Hewson) to choose papers from the main areas of philosophy, and it's a star-studded line up -- some really fascinating 2020 PHILOSOPHY ESSAY PRIZE WINNERS We're delighted to announce the outcome of the 2020 Philosophy essay prize. THE LONDON LECTURES: A PHILOSOPHERS' MANIFESTO The use of reconciliatory sentencing, amnesty for immigrants and a universal basic income are among the ideas being promoted in the Royal Institute of Philosophy’s annual lecture series, which this year is called “A Philosophers' Manifesto”. The series, which has been running since 1966, will give a wide range of philosophers the opportunity to make the philosophical case for a radical CARDIFF ANNUAL LECTURE Havi Carel is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Bristol, where she teaches both philosophy students and medical students. Her book Illness was shortlisted for the 2009 Wellcome Book Prize and is now published in its third edition. She is also the author of Phenomenology of Illness (2016) and Life and Death in Freud and Heidegger (2006), and co-editor of Health, Illness and Disease PHILOSOPHY - ROYAL-INSTITUTE-OF-PHILOSOPHY Edited by Maria Alvarez and Bill Brewer, Philosophy is published quarterly by the Cambridge University Press and sent to all members of the Institute. It includes articles, discussions and book reviews written by contributors who take care to make themselves understood to the serious non-specialist reader. THE ONLINE PHILOSOPHY COURSE The Online Philosophy Course. The Royal Institute offers free 10-week philosophy courses from time to time, and this term, given current restrictions, we'll be working entirely online. The sessions have ended this academic year, but we'll post word here soon about upcomingcourses.

On November 10, 1924, in the London School of Economics, a small meeting was held to explore the possibility of establishing a “London school of philosophical studies”. Sydney E. ------------------------- Katherine Hawley (1971-2021) We are saddened to hear of the death of Professor Katherine Hawley. Katherine served on the Royal Institute of Philosophy Council from 2015 and joined the Executive Committee in 2017. Her illness meant that she had to step down in 2019. She was a vital member of the Institute, serving at a time of considerable change and renewal. We wish we could have had her wise counsel for longer. Our thoughts are with her family, her students, and her colleagues in St Andrews andbeyond.
