Manuscripts. The Society’s collection includes around 2,000 manuscripts, originating from all over Asia. Our oldest manuscripts are almost a thousand years old. Many of our manuscripts were donated by members of the Society during the nineteenth century, having been purchased or commissioned in different parts of Asia. THE GIBB MEMORIAL TRUST The Gibb Memorial Trust was founded in 1902 in memory of Elias John Wilkinson Gibb, by his mother Jane Gibb. She wished to commemorate the untimely death of her son, a mainly self-taught scholar devoted to researching the history, literature, philosophy and SIR GEORGE THOMAS STAUNTON Sir George Thomas Staunton (1781-1859) was one of the founders of the Royal Asiatic Society, and served as its Vice-President, but he is chiefly known as Great Britain’s foremost student of Chinese language and culture during the first half of the nineteenth century. Subscribers to the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society will soon be receiving the spring issue. This edition is a festschrift created in honour of its former editor Professor David O. Morgan. THE AUREL STEIN COLLECTION The Aurel Stein collection is the largest collection of photographs in the RAS archives, comprising over 800 images in total. They were donated to the RAS in 1949 by Frederick Henry Andrews. As Nawal noted, this compendium, which includes recipes not only for a variety BUDDHIST SANSKRIT MANUSCRIPTS IN THE HODGSON COLLECTION Buddhist Sanskrit Manuscripts in the Hodgson Collection. In 1835 and 1836, Brian Houghton Hodgson gave around 80 Buddhist Sanskrit manuscripts from Nepal to the RAS. The successful candidate(s) will have a clear and exciting vision for the journal’s future development and the energy, commitment, and standing to realise thatvision.
Interested applicants are encouraged to send a brief CV and covering letter to Dr Gordon Johnson (gj206@cam.ac.uk), who is the chair of the Society’s Publications Committee. Dr Johnson is willing to answer informal enquiries. Covering letters should outline how the applicant(s) would approach the editorship, including: • thoughts on the future content and strategic direction of the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, development of the journal’s international profile, aims and scope • day to day running of the journal editorial office in the digitalworld
• financial and administrative support required from the Society • an indication of the support available (if any) from the applicant’s home institution (if relevant), including financial or administrative support and time allowed for journal work • details of any prior journal experience, especially digital publishing The total document should comprise no more than five pages. C.Sherman (LSE) Chair; Professor Naoko Shimazu (NUS); Professor Susanne Brandtstädter (Koln); Professor Rebecca Empson (UCL); Professor Arne Westad (Yale); The Society records its thanks to Professor Carole McGranahan and to Professor Sunil Amrith for their work as they step down asadjudicators.
The timetable for the competition is as follows: Submissions must be sent to Alison Ohta (ao@royalasiaticsociety.org) and Amy Riach (ar@royalasiaticsociety.org) by Wednesday, 31st March, 2021. The winner will be announced in October 2021. 15/01/21 ANOUNCEMENT OF THE BAYLY PRIZE 2020 WINNER The Society is delighted to announce that the adjudicators for the Bayly Prize have reached their decision about the winners for the 2020 competition. The Society regrets that present regulations governing social events during the pandemic prevent us from holding the usual prize giving celebration. Such an event will be organised later in the year when conditions permit. The judges report a gratifyingly strong field of submission with three dissertations being of outstandingmerit:
Liana Chase, School of Oriental and African Studies, Healing ‘Heart-Minds’: Disaster, Care, and Global Mental Health in Nepal’s Himalayan Foothills. Hannah Theaker, University of Oxford, Moving Muslims: The Great Northwestern Rebellion and the Transformation of Chinese Islam,1860-1896.
Hedwig Waters, University College, London, ‘Living from loan to loan’: Tracing networks of gifts, debt and trade in the Mongolianborderlands.
After further deliberation, the Prize is awarded to Dr Liana Chase: congratulations to her, Dr. Hannah Theaker and Dr. Hedwig Waters, the other short-listed candidates. CHINESE LETTER HONGS PROJECT NOW LIVE HTTPS://LETTERHONGS.COM/ A new project on the history of Chinese private letter hongs is now online at: https://letterhongs.com/ This website is devoted to the long history of letter exchange and letter writing by Chinese people, from the early nineteenth century to the first half of the twentieth century. The efficient operation of private letter hongs was noted by British observers in the nineteenth century including Sir George Thomas Staunton, Herbert A. Giles, and Sir Robert Hart, who founded the Great Qing Imperial Postal Service. Visit the site to see many original letters and learn more about this fascinating aspect ofcultural history.
