CARRIE BERGS Carrie Bergs, from Union Grove, Wisconsin, is a retired public relations & marketing specialist. She has been a member of the American Rose Society for 9 years. She is a member of the 2021 Cream City Roses National Convention Planning Committee and THE ROMANTIC MEILLAND ROSES The story begins with Antoine Meilland. Born in 1884 in the village of Chamboeuf in France, he was one of four children. His parents had experienced the trauma of war during a siege by the Prussians in 1870, where his mother Jenny lost a hand, and instead had an iron hook. GROWING ROSES IN PARTIAL SHADE Many rose lovers do not have the luxury of optimal sun requirements for growing roses. That was exactly the case confronting us when we built a home in the middle of Nottingham Forest, a small community near Brooksville, Florida. Our yard is completely surrounded by trees. We tried to grow Saint Augustine grass in our back yard with little success, due to a lack of sunlight. TOP EXHIBITION ROSES For the 49th consecutive year, the American Rose presents its annual survey of the top exhibition roses, with tabulations for the prior 10- and five-year periods. The tables include the complete reported results of the 2018 show season. With few exceptions, all of the roses in these tabulations are also fine garden roses, as evidenced by their relatively high RIR garden ratings. CONTAINERS FOR ROSES Container grown roses can be just as satisfying as roses grown in the ground and for those with limited space or those whose rose collections are growing faster than their planting beds, it can be a necessity. Here, I will address container choices, the size containers roses need, and the basics of growing roses in containers. Container choices range from the black plastic pots that nursery NUTRIENT RESEARCH, SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ON SOME FAVORITE Seaweed amendments can be liquid or solid, in emulsions or meals. The major nutrient that seaweed has the most of is potassium. Martin Jr., ARS President January is the time to start bare root roses in the Southwest and information abounds on how to plant them in the ground. But there is a better way to start a bare root rose – in a container. Most people are not even aware this is an option but it is and it is the way I start all of my bare rootroses.
FUNGICIDES MADE SIMPLE Disease is a major source of plant damage in roses, with the most common rose diseases being caused by fungus. While some rarely-contracted rose diseases are caused by viruses or bacteria, more often than not, it is fungi that wreak havoc in our rose gardens. Nationwide, blackspot fungus (Diplocarpon rosae Wolf) is the most common rose disease. Powdery mildew (Alphitomorpha BEST-KEPT SECRETS OF FLORAL FOAM One of the most versatile materials in the arranger’s tool-kit is floral foam (commonly referred to as Oasis®, a brand name).
