Implementation and integration works began in December 2020, while in January 2021 a part of the system was made available to the most active users. POLLINATION OPTIMIZATION SERVICE IN THE DEMETER PROJECT2021-05-20
The Demeter project involves the large-scale implementation of interoperable platforms based on smart agriculture and the Internet of Things. The assumptions are implemented through a series of 20 pilot projects in 18 countries (15 European Union countries). DEMETER integrates multiple systems and data sources, taking into account not only the Internet of Things, but also existing systems, open data, geographic and satellite information, and provides an open and interoperable data integration model.*

TESTING QKD SYSTEMS: A CRYPTOGRAPHIC KEY TRANSMITTED OVER A QUANTUMCHANNEL

In the Quantum Technologies Laboratory, operating within the NLPQT Consortium, two systems for the quantum distribution of the cryptographic key were launched and tested: Cerberis, which will serve operationally in the telecommunications network, and Clavis - intended for further development of quantum cryptography methods. The first tests of QKD systems were conducted in the PSNC headquarters.See more

POLLINATION OPTIMIZATION SERVICE IN THE DEMETER PROJECT2021-05-20
The Demeter project involves the large-scale implementation of interoperable platforms based on smart agriculture and the Internet of Things. The assumptions are implemented through a series of 20 pilot projects in 18 countries (15 European Union countries). SCIENCE
From the very beginning, PSNC provides the scientific community with high-performance computing services, communication services, data archiving, regional databases, specialized services, cloud services and scientific applications using computing resources and virtualization techniques. The HPC Center operating within PSNC, provides computing power, disk space and archiving systems for science, business and public institutions, and the Eagle supercomputer was present on the list of the fastest computing installations in the world – TOP500.org. Our computing resources include systems with shared and distributed memory of various architectures (vector-parallel, multiprocessor SMP and clusters) connected by fast local networks with low latency. IT AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS PSNC has been successfully implementing the construction of the PIONIER national fiber optic scientific network since 2001. Currently, PIONIER covers 6824 km of fibers in Poland and 2454 km in Europe, connecting all Polish academic environments, i.e. 21 municipal computer networks in 21 academic cities and 6 centres of High-Performance Supercomputing centers. Within the framework of the PIONIER network, there have also been built cross-border fiber-optic connections with all scientific networks of neighboring countries and a large part of international scientific cooperation is realized thanks to these connections. Additionally, a node of the pan-European research network GÉANT has been built by PSNC and connected to the PIONIER network with a 100Gb/s connection. DATA PROTECTION AND CYBERSECURITY The core areas of PSNC’s data protection and cyber-security activities include operational supervision of advanced network and computing infrastructure as well as cyber-security tasks within the framework of research projects. The team of IT security experts at PSNC actively participates in the work of the PIONIER-CERT group, whose main task is to handle all security incidents in which computers connected to the PIONIER National Broadband Scientific Network are directly or indirectly involved. EDUCATION OF THE FUTURE PSNC has designed and created a dedicated educational laboratory space that enables modeling and researching student and teacher interaction with next-generation digital network services based on interfaces using voice, motion and gesture, bioelectric brain activity, eye movement, and other sensory-motor activities. Currently, works are carried out in the field of advanced perception analysis of artificial multimodal stimuli, new interfaces involving various human perception systems, such as Tangible User Interfaces, haptic devices, sight and hearing, and virtual and augmented reality. R&D activities at PSNC are based on innovative applications, educational games and virtual vocational trainers which are the basis for student experiments. MEDICINE, HEALTH AND QUALITY OF LIFE At our Center, we promote and support applications of modern ICT technologies in a variety of contexts related to the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients, as well as increasing the quality of life of people at risk of social exclusion due to health condition or disability. Our challenges include the areas of personalized medicine, medical tele-education, telemedicine and patient e-Health services for patients. An important topic undertaken in our projects is the creation of innovative solutions to support active and healthy life of the elderly, adults and people with disabilities. These solutions are based on the integration of advanced technologies, including the Internet of Things or ArtificialIntelligence.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
R&D activities in the field of intelligent energy management aim at optimizing resources in order to minimize environmental impact. The development of environmentally friendly technologies and energy-saving methods is one of the key challenges for scientists and engineers. The implementation of green and energy-saving technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution is one of the European Union’s research priorities. Therefore, work on energy-efficient ICTs focuses, on the one hand, on the use of energy-efficient ICT equipment, the energy efficiency of applications, resource management, but also on the use of ICTs for modeling and simulation of heating and cooling processes, energy management in homes and offices or smartenergy networks.
SMART AGRICULTURE AND FORESTRY PSNC implements a number of research and development works aimed at developing and implementing dedicated platforms for data exchange, services and applications for innovative agriculture. PSNC is also making use of the Internet of Things infrastructure, satellite imagery, and drones to monitor crops and optimize agricultural processes. Thanks to the results of our work, farmers receive access to information and tools necessary to run a modern farm, and software producers and data providers – receive customers for their products and services. Special emphasis is placed on the dissemination of tools for managing the plant protection process using the decision supportsystem.
CLIMATE AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENT We cooperate with experts in the field of computer modeling of atmospheric phenomena, environmental monitoring, and atmospheric pollution. For many years PSNC research teams have been carrying out research and development activities and implementing new services and applications, providing information on the current and projected state of the environment on an urban, regional, national and international scale. Information and communication technologies, in particular high-performance computing and new techniques for processing and analyzing data generated by control and measurement equipment, terrestrial sensors, IoT networks, and satellite-based earth observation systems are playing an increasing role in addressing thesegreat challenges.
AVIATION AND COSMONAUTICS At PSNC we use the huge potential of ICT infrastructure and many dedicated laboratories, including a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles, which are the basis for innovative applications in agriculture, among others in logistics and education. Together with the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency we take up a huge challenge to co-create innovative digital services and solutions for new generation aviation under the NaviHUB initiative. We plan to take advantage of the new experimental and laboratory space at the airport in Kąkolewo connected with the infrastructure of the PIONIER scientific network as well as data collection and processing services. CULTURE AND HERITAGE Specialized software packages supporting various processes of digitization of culture, art, and national heritage collections have been created at PSNC since 2002. We have successfully completed many implementations and individual orders both for individual entities and consortia. Our solutions are already used by several hundred institutions and companies in Poland and abroad, including libraries, universities, museums, archives and non-governmental organizations. During implementation, we take care of appropriate configuration and adaptation of our solutions to individual customer needs, which thanks to our experience is fully efficient and professional. DIGITAL ART (ART & SCIENCE) The natural path of using the technological knowledge of the Poznan Center is to support all activities on the borderline of audiovisual, multimedia, theater and film art. Many years of experience and cooperation with interdisciplinary artistic environments allow us to create original sceneries, attractive and non-standard use of research equipment, and implement complex ideas using the latest equipment and modern, often prototype IT solutions. Thus, at PSNC, we develop methods of creating innovation using the creative dialogue of engineering and art creators.NEW MEDIA
PSNC has created dedicated laboratories for the development of new media technologies, providing scientists with access to modern test infrastructure. Existing PSNC laboratories can provide ultra-high resolution visualization (16K, 8K, 8K 3D), real-time encoding and decoding, as well as live streaming, real-time rendering of VR and 3D graphics for immersive spaces (cubic and cylindrical CAVE technologies with support of remote visualization) or interaction with multiple users around the world. PSNC is also a co-producer of international events using innovative new media technologies DISSEMINATION AND PROMOTION Modern science and the development of new technologies require promotional activities in order to effectively reach a wide audience. Such activities in larger and smaller projects often become _the nucleus_ of new and more interesting applications for scientific research, meeting the needs of different interest groups and contributing to the creation of a positive image of scientists. Our achievements include dozens of conferences, events and workshops, which support Polish science in the field of IT, using modern technologies with new media at the forefront. We are an important “point of contact” between scientists and society, showing how to do even better what they are passionate about. SMART CITIES AND CIVIL SOCIETY One of the important areas of PSNC activity is the integration and implementation of scientific results in the form of services developed in partnership with public sector entities, acting as substantive partners – including public administration, medicine, education and the social sphere. Within the framework of this path of PSNC’s activity, cooperating with the City of Poznań since 1996, PSNC has created and develops information and service systems supporting the local government, as well as offers innovative services to the inhabitants of Poznań, including an information and service platform for the City of Poznań (Municipal Multimedia Guide), a system supporting recruitment to schools, an online platform of the Poznań Civic Budget or the city’s Open Data Platform. STARTUPS AND BUSINESS INCUBATION For many years we have been trying to create favourable conditions for the development and support of innovative undertakings in close cooperation with the local business community. Together with the City of Poznań, Poznań University of Technology and Poznań IT companies we have created the Wielkopolska IT Cluster. The aim of the Cluster is to connect and cooperate with local authorities, research and development units and business representatives in order to popularize and develop initiatives based on modern information and communicationtechnologies.
INDUSTRY 4.0
Thanks to the advanced PSNC laboratory base, in particular including experimental spaces consisting of robotic and cyber-physical systems and the experience of teams in the integration of technologies based on the Internet Things (IoT), cloud technologies and the existing HPC infrastructure, joint activities are undertaken together with PSNC partners (on a regional, national and EU scale) in the implementation of pilot solutions of Industry 4.0. Together with partners we create and provide digital transformation services of Industry 4.0. We develop technological competence of current and future employees by organizing dedicated workshops and demonstrations in the smart factorymodel.

Technologies of the future NEXT GENERATION NETWORKS The main goal of the New Generation Networks is to provide all users with a variety of services at the highest level of quality and reliability. Therefore, from the very beginning of its existence, PSNC has become an important research and development center in the field of information and communication technologies. The aim of its establishment was, among others, to build and coordinate the use of the POZMAN Metropolitan Area Network and supercomputers in Poznań by the units represented in the College of Rectors in the City ofPoznań.
SUPERCOMPUTING
PSNC, as a High-Performance Computing Centers, has one of the best Polish clusters called Orzeł (Eagle) with 1.7 PFlops of computational power. It is also one of the most energy-efficient systems, which was created in the region of Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). PSNC computing resources are used by scientists working in various fields of science: astrophysicists, biologists, chemists, and physicists. Topics of these calculations include quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics, crystallography, computational biology, astrophysics, physics, construction, and machine simulations.BIG DATA ANALYTICS
PSNC conducts research and development works related to the challenges for Exascale systems as well as tools and services supporting the creation and execution of large-scale scientific simulations on high-performance computing systems of the current and next generation. These activities are maintained in cooperation with leading teams using large-scale computer simulations in nuclear fusion research, biomedicine, and nanotechnology. ARCHIVING AND DISK RESOURCES Research & development based on IT systems requires resources large data storage resources. PSNC, with the full support of specialists and using the latest equipment, offers a whole range of archiving, backup storage and long-term storage for R&D results. The systems, built on the basis of proven, reliable and secure solutions, on a national level, are available through the PIONIER scientific network and Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs), and allow for efficient and permanent access to data not only for the needs of the research and scientific environment in Poland, but also for state and local government institutions. CLOUDS, VIRTUALIZATION AND GRIDS The numerous problems faced by modern science often require international cooperation and the use of specialized equipment and expert knowledge. In order to meet such challenges, PSNC carries out projects in the field of cloud computing, i.e. methods and techniques allowing for virtualization of remote and shared resources, both scientific and industrial instruments. The possibility of using scientific and industrial devices, regardless of their physical location, helps to equalize the chances of using the instruments available so far only for a small group of people and contribute to the development of science and industry. DIGITISATION AND DIGITAL CONTENT The history of the development of digitization and digital libraries at PSNC dates back to 1996 when research work began on the use of the PIONIER Network to provide access to the resources of scientific and cultural institutions for the needs of research, in particular in the humanities. The result of these works was a prototype system for building digital libraries. Currently, the PSNC Digital Libraries and Knowledge Platform Team is conducting advanced work in the field of digitization in the Visualization and Interaction Laboratory, which is a specific research tool for the processes of mass 2D digitization as well as long-term storage and sharing of digital objects. VISUALISATION, IMMERSION AND INTERACTION Advanced visualization, including virtual reality (VR) and immersion, are the next stages of media development. VR applications, unlike traditional video, movies, and television, through their immersion make the experience of watching multimedia content increasingly intense, more interactive and personalized. However, regardless of the challenges posed to VR, hardware, and software manufacturers are faced with the need to carry out a large number of research and development activities to bring these technologies to the broad consumer market. This assumption underlies the research conducted at PSNC. PROCESSING AND TRANSMISSION OF MULTIMEDIA Multimedia streaming is one of the most natural, most common and also the most visually attractive services provided by the use of the broadband network. At PSNC, many projects in this area are associated with the development of high-speed Internet and evolutionary changes in the next generation of network e-infrastructure. For years, we have been successfully implementing, among others, UHD content streaming with effective compression or VR / 360⁰ content transmission in the best possible quality. The application of this type of streaming can be used in various areas and different scenarios, such as medicine, economy, culture or art. REMOTE PRESENCE AND VIDEOCONFERENCING PSNC together with our partners from the Metropolitan Area Networks and High-Performance Computing Centres, based on previous experience, has become a leader in services addressed to the entire Polish academic community. Poznan Center offers high definition video conferencing services and scientific interactive HD television along with a national distribution platform for network television. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND MACHINE LEARNING Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) issues are related to specific challenges at PSNC, such as automation of customer service, creating diagnostic models, selection of appropriate machine learning methodologies, support of clinical decisions, use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to extract knowledge from digital heritage collections, or efficient search of the ML model parameter space for optimization. MOTION TRACKING AND BIOMETRICS Biometrics is currently one of the most important aspects in the field of data processing and security. Systems using biometric techniques to confirm identity are beginning to be used worldwide. Biometric methods, for which authentication and identification are of particular importance, have also become the subject of research work at PSNC. These works relate to the application of biometrics in various sectors of public life, such as banking, administration, healthcare, ande-commerce.
MOBILE APPLICATIONS
The ability to create application solution for many, sometimes small challenges, which in the package of common tools can constitute a big qualitative leap – is not only a long-term asset of PSNC but also a way to constantly look for methods to make life easier. Today, innovative PSNC applications are elements of larger, complex solution packages, integrating many years of knowledge of our technologyspecialists.
WEB PORTALS, SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS Many innovative services and applications created at PSNC are IT solutions supporting too long or non-automated processes. Some of them have evolved into separate areas of the Center’s activity, others meet the specific needs of users, and there are also some solutions that have been recorded in the history of PSNC as an important chapter of experience and expertise in completely new areas of science andeconomy.
NEW USER INTERFACES
The field of user interface design has been developing very dynamically for years. Progress is primarily driven by the development of the consumer electronics market – especially mobile devices, where intuitiveness of operation is a feature that, along with other functions, can encourage the use of a given equipment. PSNC’s main challenges in this respect include manual interfaces in applications supporting pre-school and early childhood education, user interfaces for people with disabilities, aerial simulators and new user interfaces in accessing cultural, artistic and heritage resources.DIGITAL ELECTRONICS
Digital electronics is facing countless challenges. PSNC recognizing the need for its own implementation of advanced solutions in this area has undertaken work to build a laboratory for the design and production of prototypes of electronic devices. The laboratory enables the implementation of all phases of hardware systems creation, starting from design through testing, up to prototype and small production series of modern digital electronics devices. As part of the CBPIO project, the laboratory will be complemented with a complete production line for complex printed circuits, maintaining standards and obtaining the parameters required in modern electronics.INTERNET OF THINGS
Internet of Things activities at PSNC are conducted in the Laboratory for the Integration of Network Services with IoT networks and the Scientific Use of Social Infrastructures. This laboratory is a kind of workshop for rapid prototyping of hardware solutions, currently offering services for scientific entities and companies, enabling research and development works in the field of the Internet of Things. It is equipped with a number of tools and devices, from developer’s sets of electronics, microcontrollers, sensors, to CNC processing equipment, weather stations or air quality testing stations. AIRPORT OF THINGS” PROJECT, modern laboratory space and a hangar for testing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) with a total area of 1500 m2 is being built on the premises of the Poznań Aeroclub airport in Kakolewo, near Poznan. Together with the Poznan University of Technology, PSNC will develop there a research infrastructure for the needs of air transport. THUS, FROM 2019, PSNC’S LABORATORIES ALSO INCLUDE A REGULAR AIRPORT TO ALLOWING THE TESTS OF REAL AIR STRUCTURES! DID YOU KNOW THAT…? EAGLE OUR FASTEST SUPERCOMPUTER CALLED EAGLE, implemented at the beginning of 2016, is one of the most powerful supercomputer systems in the world. The machine offers 1.4 PFlops of processing power. It consists of about 1,300 servers with a total of 33,000 cores and 120 TB of operational memory (RAM) and can be connected to 42 Petabytes of diskspace.
