January 26th, 2016 - NYU's Development Research Institute hosted a public screening of the new hit documentary film, Poverty, Inc. The screening was followed by an in-depth question and answer session between DRI Director William Easterly, film makers Michael Matheson Miller and Mark Weber, and the audience. Poverty, Inc. The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of development, giving rise to a vast multi-billion dollar poverty industry — the business of doing good has never been better. Yet the results have been mixed, in some cases even catastrophic, and leaders in the developing world are growing increasingly vocal in calling for change. INTERVIEWS — POVERTY, INC. NONPROFITS AND COMPANIES For the Akron Premiere, Trades of Hope recruited numerous sponsors including the Akron Civic Theater, which donated the venue. To pay the venue staff and cover the cost of the license, the Akron Community Foundation, First Friends Church of Canton, Christ Community Chapel of Akron, Terry Horner Photography, and Essential Story, Inc. all chipped in to make the screening free for the community. EDUCATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS Over 200 Harvard Law School students came out to watch and discuss Poverty, Inc. The post-screening discussion with co-producer Mark Weber went over 60 minutes.
