After many years of laying in ruin under the ownership of the Pryse family from Gogerddan, plundered for stone by the locals, and a subject of many Romantic paintings, in the 1880s Pembroke Castle was leased by the antiquarian J. R. Cobb who restoredpart of the castle.

Situated in the Castle’s Inner Ward, is Dungeon Tower, built during the 13th century. Inside, you can see one of the few remaining authentic medieval gaols. The dungeon of Pembroke Castle is in the form of an oubliette, from the French ‘oublier’ meaning ‘to forget’. The sole access to the basement dungeon was through a hatchin the

1066. Soon after the Battle of Hastings in 1066 the victorious Norman invaders looked to Wales, but it was not until 1093 that Earl Roger of Montgomery built the first Pembroke Castle. Although it was a fairly basic structure of timber palisades the castle stood firm against Welsh counter attacks. BIRTHPLACE OF HENRY VII Henry VII was King of England between 1485 – 1509. The first Tudor monarch, he came to the throne when he defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth, bringing the Wars of the Roses to an end. He was succeeded by his second son, Henry VIII. Dog Friendly. Pembroke Castle is a dog-friendly attraction, and welcomes well-behaved dogs on short leads anywhere in the castle with the exception of the cafe and shop.
