And yet, sometimes, that is an option that dog owners have to consider. These were some of the hardest cases I worked with when I was seeing clients full time. VISITS FROM FORMER OWNERS: GOOD FOR DOGS? Sometimes it’s just a bad match–a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. But, in terms of visits from former owners, I think what is most important is our best guess as to where the dog’s heart is. BIOLOGY OF DOGS: BOOK REVIEW I’ve been looking forward to receiving my copy of Tim Lewis’s new book, The Biology of Dogs: From Gonads Through Guts to Ganglia for a few weeks now, given all the buzz it has generated. And wow. I have not been disappointed. Lewis is a professor of biology at the University of St. Thomas (MN), lives with two sheep-herding Border Collies and “hovers on the edges of the dog agility and TIRED DOG? GOOD. OVERTIRED DOG?. . . NOT SO GOOD. I can’t begin to count the number of times I’ve heard “A tired dog is a good dog.” We all know the point is that under-exercised dogs often get themselves into trouble chewing, pacing, or pondering ways to get online and order dog toys with your credit card. True, as far as it goes (except "MUZZLE PUNCHES," "AIR SNAPS" AND "TOOTH CLACKING" Hmm, I have to say that both my teeny JRT and I can attest to the muzzle punches of my two year old Australian Cattle Dog actually hurting. I take the Dr. Dunbar view and squeal like she is killing me thus hopefully giving her the idea that to non-cattle dogs that behavior is unpleasant and gee, people (and 11 lb jack russells) are so darn delicate you just have to be super careful with them PATRICIA MCCONNELL PH.D. She was responsive and polite, and the other dogs seemed to like her as much as I did. It was especially rainy when she visited, so I appreciated that she never objected to endless paw wiping and toweling off, not to ADOPTING LITTERMATES... (DON'T) The title of this post is a bit strong, but I do want to caution people from adopting two dogs from the same litter because “it’s easier” to raise two at once (ask someone with twins if it’s easier than having one child) or “we don’t want our dog to be lonely.” (Because you might be if the dogs are so enchanted with each other that they ignore you).
