PARTICIPATORY APPROACHES Using participatory approaches in impact evaluation means involving stakeholders, particularly the participants in a programme or those affected by a given policy, in specific aspects of the evaluation process. The term covers a wide range of different types of participation and stakeholders can be involved in any stage of the impact evaluation process, including: its design, data collection PARTICIPATORY ACTION RESEARCH Participatory Action Research (PAR) is an approach to enquiry which has been used since the 1940s. It involves researchers and participants working together to understand a problematic situation and change it for the better. There are many definitions of the approach, which share some common elements. PAR focuses on social change that promotes democracy and challenges inequality; is context PARTICIPATORY POVERTY ASSESSMENTS Governments and their development partners formulate and implement a range of poverty reduction policies, frameworks and strategies. The rationale for Participatory Poverty Assessments (PPAs) is that for these policies to work, the voices of poor and marginalised people and their understandings of poverty need to be included. Preface This study is part of a global research effort entitled Consultations with the Poor, designed to inform the World Development Report 2000/1 on Poverty and Development. The research involved poor people in twenty-three countries around the world. PARTICIPATORY POVERTY ASSESSMENTS Governments and their development partners formulate and implement a range of poverty reduction policies, frameworks and strategies. The rationale for Participatory Poverty Assessments (PPAs) is that for these policies to work, the voices of poor and marginalised people and their understandings of poverty need to be included. Failure to respect and respond to how poor people experience poverty TOOLS FOR COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION A comprehensive and clear guide to training, with techniques aimed at all types of participatory training. It opens with a discussion of some concepts commonly considered as 'participation', and discusses their perceptions of participation and the ideas behind participatory training. This is contrasted with traditional teaching methods. All stages are discussed - from the planning and design RAPID RURAL APPRAISAL (RRA) Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) emerged in the late 1970s in response to some of the problems with large-scale, structured questionnaire surveys. It provided an alternative technique for outsiders – often scientists carrying out research into agriculture – to quickly learn from local people about their realities and challenges. RRA practitioners worked in multi-disciplinary teams and pioneered EMPOWERING CHILDREN THROUGH VISUAL COMMUNICATION This research project explores how visual means could be used to improve communication amongst children and between children and adults in the primary school.
