GREG GUND CONSERVATION CENTER, COSTA RICA The Greg Gund Conservation Center is the educational campus located on our Cerra Osa property. This open-air education center is a wonderful place to hold classes and workshops. The Greg Gund Conservation Center includes a beautiful education center donated to us by the Gund family. The world’s tropical forests are being degraded at an alarming rate, resulting in a huge loss of species diversity. The southern beaches of the Osa Peninsula are visited primarily by two species of nesting turtles: Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) and Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas).Leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) and Hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) are also occasional visitors.Intriguingly, the different sea turtle varieties visit the Osa at varying times with DUNG BEETLES: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE Understanding the dung beetle communities in different forest types can be a useful monitoring tool in reforestation projects. Dung beetles serve as a reference point of forest health and help set what we call a “primary forest baseline” which gives a restoration goal to work towards as we continue our studies. Camera Traps: In 2013, UNA and Osa Conservation created the Camera Trap Network for the Osa Peninsula. This initiative, now the largest camera trap array in Costa Rica, is composed of NGOs, hotels, eco-lodges, and private landowners that are willing to contribute to the research and conservation of the wild cats and their prey in theOsa Peninsula.
