Each year, many orangutans are smuggled from their habitats in Borneo and Sumatra to Java and overseas. Threats to Orangutans. There are numerous threats to the viability of the remaining wild orangutan population in Indonesia and Malaysia. They finally entered the pre-release stage of rehabilitation – the last step on their journey to freedom. Amongst them were three Orangutan Jungle School stars: Cinta, Valentino and Jumbo. Loss of habitat The most important risk factor for orangutans is the loss of habitat. Suitable orangutan habitat in Indonesia and Malaysia has declined by more than 80% in the last 20 years. It is estimated that an average of 1.15 million ha of forest per annum has been lostOUR BIG BOY BENI!
Our Big Boy in Forest School. Today, Beni has successfully graduated from forest school, and – here it comes – is only one step away from moving to a safe forested pre-release island! This step will be the last one before his final return to the wild. Until then, he is staying in his very own enclosure in the rehabilitation centre.
