PROTEST MELBOURNE
The right to protest is important in a democracy. In between elections, it allows citizens to express their views directly to government and the community on issues they believe to be important. In Melbourne we tend to take that right for granted. Throughout our history, men and women have taken toWOMEN'S RIGHTS
The first campaigns for women's rights began in Victoria in the 1880s. At that time the focus of activity was the right to vote, for although adult men were enfranchised from 1857, women were excluded. It was to be a long campaign. Early suffragists were also concerned about accessto education, abo

AUSTRALIAN WOMEN'S LAND ARMY The Women’s Auxiliary Transport Service in Queensland directed some of its members to land work and in Victoria, the Country Women's Association Land Army (CWALA) was formed. Established as a national organisation on 27 July 1942, the Australian Women’s Land Army united these groups under the jurisdiction of the Director-General ofManpower.

Alluvial gold. Mining shallow alluvial gold was straightforward. All you needed was a regular water supply, picks and shovels, pans, and a cradle like the one here. She was actually a publican’s daughter from Essendon, but liked to pass herself off as a Russian, presumably to add an exotic note to her business as a ‘futurist’ or ‘palmist’ (a reader of palms) and masseuse. BETTY JEFFREY'S DIARY Betty Jeffrey’s Diary. While a P.O.W., Betty Jeffrey kept a diary, recording the physical and mental battle for survival, and the death of friends. The Japanese searched for diaries and there were severe consequences for those who kept them. Diaries were carefully hidden or thrown down the lavatory.
