THE OGUNQUIT ART COLONY (1922-1952) By Ruth Greene-McNally* By the early 20th century, the allure of Narrow Cove attracted greater numbers of artists, gallerists, collectors, and sightseers who had discovered the secluded fishing community named Ogunquit the “beautiful place by the sea” by the Abenaki tribe nearly a century earlier. Woodbury’s earliest etchings were based on preliminary sketches and date to a series created in Holland and Nova Scotia, c. 1890. Between 1917 and 1918, Woodbury observed a daily schedule of sketching exercises. THE OGUNQUIT ART COLONY (1922-1952) By Ruth Greene-McNally* By the early 20th century, the allure of Narrow Cove attracted greater numbers of artists, gallerists, collectors, and sightseers who had discovered the secluded fishing community named Ogunquit the “beautiful place by the sea” by the Abenaki tribe nearly a century earlier. Woodbury’s earliest etchings were based on preliminary sketches and date to a series created in Holland and Nova Scotia, c. 1890. Between 1917 and 1918, Woodbury observed a daily schedule of sketching exercises. He carried 5×7 inch drawing cards on which he would record, generally with a lithography crayon, any action that caughthis eye.

Christopher Crosman served as Director of the Farnsworth Art Museum for 17 years, where he was instrumental in establishing the Wyeth Center. Held over through 2021, this “living history” installation reimagines Woodbury’s workspace as it appeared between the 1890s through the end of his life. As founder of the Ogunquit Summer School of Drawing and Painting, Charles Woodbury is credited with formalizing Ogunquit’s reputation as a premier artcolony.
