I’ve already planted one of them—hyacinth bean vine—in a spot where I’ll be able to watch the hummingbirds from my kitchen window. One of the MSHS Pollinator Paks™ also includes six fabulous perennial plants for hummingbirds. A VISIT TO MARGE HOLS GARDEN A Visit to Marge Hols Garden. For texture and color, Marge uses conifers and perennials. Last week, about 100 eager gardeners and supporters of the Minnesota State Horticultural Society descended on Marge Hols’ gorgeous St. Paul garden. The occasion was the Garden Gathering, a special garden tour for those who have donated $200 ormore to MSHS.
UPDATE ON JUMPING WORMS IN MINNESOTA Jumping worms live in leaf litter or the first few inches of soil. They survive our winters as cocoons underground. Worms are very tiny in spring but grow to 4 to 5 inches by midsummer. As they infest an area, the soil begins to look like coffee grounds or ground hamburger. Serious infestations can lead to soil erosion, especially on slopes CAN YOU PRUNE SQUASH VINES? The good news is you can prune squash vines — with some caveats. Of course, you don’t have to prune squash vines. If you have the room, let them go wild and you’ll be rewarded with tons of winter squash. Staghorn sumac is a large treelike shrub native to the eastern edge of Minnesota, Wisconsin and much of southeastern Canada. They are not particularly fussy. Redbud grows well in full to partial sun (in the wild, it is an understory tree), and can tolerate a variety of soil types. It does not tolerate salt well, so you may want to plant your redbud closer tothe

This is when hydrangeas shine HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM A GARDEN TOUR July is the big month for garden tours, and Minnesota is blessed to have dozens of them every year. Because I edit Northern Gardener, I attend between 10 and 12 tours every summer. All those days spent walking around other people’s gardens has given me some insight into how to get the most from a garden tour. HOW TO GROW GREEN BEANS Water the seeds well and maintain consistent moisture while the beans germinate. Beans need about an inch of moisture a week. The seed packet will tell you how long to wait before harvest, but many beans will be producing a crop within 50 or 60 days. Once the beans start coming, be sure to harvest regularly.
