NIAC Signs Representative AOC’s Resolution Disapproving Arms Sales to Israel. NIAC Action joined Jewish Voice for Peace, Win Without War, MoveOn and over 100 other organizations to support U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s resolution to block a planned 735 million-dollar sale of weapons to Israel. DIPLOMATIC PROGRESS TOWARDS A JCPOA RETURN Diplomatic Progress Towards a JCPOA Return. The JCPOA’s Joint Commission met in Vienna for its 18th meeting since the nuclear accord’s implementation in 2016. The Joint Commission is composed of the participant states in the JCPOA, which includes Iran and the “P4+1” (the UK, France, Germany, Russia, and China). #IRANELECTION2021: THE PLAYERS, ISSUES, AND IMPACTS Iran’s presidential election is fast approaching on June 18th. The Guardian Council, a governmental body composed of 12 clerics and jurists, has disqualified all but 7 out of the 592 candidates who registered to run. Out of these, the leading candidate is FRENCH CITIZEN CHARGED WITH SPYING IN IRAN Thirty-five-year-old French citizen, Benjamin Brière, was arrested in Iran in May of 2020 for allegedly flying a drone and taking photos in a restricted area near an Iranian border. Brière is now facing charges of espionage and “propaganda against the system” in anIranian court.
U.S. POSTAL SERVICE RESTRICTING MAIL TO IRAN This new situation has understandably been the source of significant distress for some, as the U.S. Postal Service appears to be rejecting shipments to Iran – including, for instance, gifts valued at equal to or less than $100 and medicines – that are authorized under licenses issued by OFAC and have never before been rejected by the U.S SHIPPING TO IRAN FROM THE UNITED STATES Since late 2017, NIAC has received reports from Iranian Americans who had lawful shipments to Iran turned away by the U.S. Postal Service ("USPS"). OFFICIALS TALK ABOUT A JCPOA RETURN WITH BIDEN Rouhani held his weekly cabinet meeting hours before President Joe Biden’s inauguration ceremony. Rouhani talked about the Trump era and returning to the JCPOA, among other issues. Rouhani said Trump’s main legacy was increasing “polarization in American society.”.
