LAND INVERTEBRATES
Land invertebrates in Iceland belong to several phyla. Arthropods (Arthropoda) constitute the most species-rich phylum, with approximately 2,000 known species, including insects, arachnids, millipedes, and crustaceans.Other phyla are much species-poorer. These include the molluscs (Mollusca), with 46 species of snails and slugs, and the annelids (Annelida), with 13 species of earthworms EMPLOYEES | NÁTTÚRUFRÆÐISTOFNUN ÍSLANDS Anna Sveinsdóttir. Many species are imported deliberately, either for use in commercial agriculture, horticulture, and sylviculture or for use as ornamental garden plants. Other species have been brought inadvertently to Iceland, with travellers or imported goods. POLLEN | NÁTTÚRUFRÆÐISTOFNUN ÍSLANDS Pollen levels then peak either in late May or early June. The history of the IINH goes all the way back to 1889, when the Icelandic Natural History Society was founded. Today, around 60 employees work for the IINH at our locations in Garðabær and Akureyri. FAUNA | NÁTTÚRUFRÆÐISTOFNUN ÍSLANDS The fauna of Iceland numbers thousands of species. More than 2,000 freshwater and terrestrial animal species live in Iceland, and over 2,500 marine animal species have been found in Iceland’s exclusive economic zone. The total figure is certainly much higher, as many species-rich animal groups found in Iceland have been little studied. MINERALS | NÁTTÚRUFRÆÐISTOFNUN ÍSLANDS Minerals are defined as naturally occurring, homogenous, solid substances with a specific chemical composition and ordered atomic structure (crystalline), generally formed through inorganic processes. Over 5,000 minerals are known to exist worldwide, of which more than 300 have been found in Iceland.
VEGETATION | NÁTTÚRUFRÆÐISTOFNUN ÍSLANDS Various environmental factors determine the vegetation of an area, including its climate and substrate. In Iceland, the maritime climate, volcanic activity, movement of outlet glaciers, and overgrazing are among the factors that are unfavourable for vegetation growth and succession. Major changes to the vegetation have occurred since the settlement of Iceland.BIRD RINGING
Report a ringed bird find If you find a ringed bird in Iceland, please report it to the IINH, either by email at fuglamerki@ni.is or by telephoning our office at +354-590-0500. You will receive information about where and when the bird was ringed, the bird’s age, and the distance from the original ringing site. Pollen levels in the Greater Reykjavík Area and Akureyri are monitored from April 15th to September 30th every year in cooperation with the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
