NAUTILUS LIVE
Ocean Exploration Trust and the Nautilus Exploration Program seek out new discoveries in geology, biology, and archaeology while conducting scientific exploration of the seafloor. Our expeditions launch aboard Exploration Vessel Nautilus — a 64-meter research ship equipped with live-streaming underwater vehicles for scientists, students, and the public to explore the deep sea from anywhereE/V NAUTILUS
Welcome Aboard E/V Nautilus . Exploration Vessel (E/V) Nautilus is owned and operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established to explore the world’s oceans to seek out new discoveries in the fields of geology, biology, maritime history, archaeology, and chemistry. OET was founded in 2008 by Dr. Robert Ballard to engage in pure ocean exploration. MONTERREY B & C SHIPWRECK MODELS In 2013, the Corps of Exploration discovered two new shipwrecks while surveying the Monterrey A shipwreck in the Gulf of Mexico. Suddenly one mystery tripled in scale. Monterrey B sank carrying a cargo of hides and large, white blocks of something archaeologists can’t identify. They could be tallow (fat from cattle) used for making candles, a tree sap called copal used in varnish, or even BEYOND THE WOW: THE SIX TYPES OF SHIP MOTION Beyond the Wow is a series of education videos for students to learn about the engineering principles behind our operations. Exploratory missions of the 64-meter (211-foot) E/V Nautilus rely heavily on the knowledge and expertise of our bridge crew and navigators. But to do so, it is important to understand the mechanics of the ocean and how they influence the way in which a ship moves.ROV HERCULES
This neutrally buoyant yellow remotely operated vehicle (ROV) is the workhorse of the Nautilus Exploration Program, and it always used in tandem with Argus. Hercules is equipped with six thrusters that allow the pilots to "fly" it in any direction, plus two manipulator arms designed for collecting samples and recovering artifacts. Video from Hercules' high-definition main camera is streamed up CONGRATULATIONS 2020 NAUTILUS EDUCATION PROGRAM UPDATE: August 7, 2020. As Ocean Exploration Trust has been continually assessing how to move forward with our exploration and education programs, we have been basing our decisions on the safety and wellbeing of our program participants, crew, staff, andcommunities.

E/V Nautilus can host up to 31 members of the science team and 17 ship’s crew, all contributing in various ways to the expedition. Without each team member’s unique skill set and passions — whether maintaining equipment, recording scientific observations, cooking hearty meals, processing data, or sharing discoveries with classrooms — our missions could not be successful. CRUISE | NAUTILUS LIVE Located in Lake Huron, TBNMS was established in 2000 to protect one of the nation’s most historically significant collections of shipwrecks. Within this boundary are 99 known shipwreck sites, while historic research indicates as many 100 additional sites in the area remain undiscovered. Submerged archaeological sites within TBNMS are anearly

ROV ARGUS | NAUTILUS LIVE This stainless steel towsled-style ROV is typically used in conjunction with Hercules, although it can be operated alone. When used in tandem, Argus takes the roll of the ship so Hercules can remain steady through sensitive operations. It also provides additional light and serves as an "eye in the sky" during operations. When operating alone, it can dive deeper than Hercules - down to 6,000 CRUISE | NAUTILUS LIVE The Galapagos archipelago is a group of volcanic islands lying about 900 km off the coast of Ecuador in the central eastern Pacific Ocean. They have formed as a result of a deep-seated mantle hotspot supplying excess magma to the seafloor in this region. The last recorded eruption occurred in 2009 from the La Cumbre volcano on the island of LIFE FINDS A WAY: THE BIOLOGY OF SHIPWRECKS Life Finds a Way: The Biology of Shipwrecks. Many of the shipwrecks E/V Nautilus comes across are covered in biology, ranging from huge lophelia coral to beautiful flytrap anemones and much more. Check out the video below - it highlights some of the wrecks we’ve seen in the past week, all of them home to different sea creatures.PHIL STEPHENSON

The transit route has been planned to fill in gaps in seabed mapping coverage across the Pacific, plus targeted mapping of a number of seamounts in the vicinity of the Murray Skip to main contentMAIN NAVIGATION
