The artist’s ceramic mosaic vessels grow out of 15 years of commitment to creating urban gardens with the help of surrounding communities. She has worked on projects in New York, Boston, Palermo, Italy and San Antonio, Texas, among others addressing the relationship of people to nature as reflected in the contemporary urban landscape. Joseph Raffael was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1933. He attended Cooper Union from 1953-54, and received his B.F.A. from Yale School of Fine Arts in 1956 after studying with Josef Albers on a summer fellowship at Yale in 1954. From 1958-59 he had a Fulbright Fellowship to Florence and Rome. In 1966 he taught at the University ofCalifornia
HUNG LIU GRANDFATHER'S MOUNTAIN The exhibition at the Nancy Hoffman Gallery in New York is called "Qianshan: Grandfather's Mountain." Liu is well known for basing her large, often drippy oil paintings on Chinese historical photographs, often of young prostitutes or war refugees, and her subjects are usually anonymous, lost to history. With her new paintings, "Qianshan HUNG LIU AMERICAN EXODUS The first show of the Fall season at Nancy Hoffman Gallery, entitled “American Exodus,” new oil paintings and watercolors by Hung Liu, opens on September 8 and continues through October 22.
