MY PHILIPPINE LIFE
The Philippines is not an economy version of Hawaii. The Philippines is decidedly a developing country with all the limitations that suggests. Further, there are other affordable retirement destinations to consider. Malaysia and Thailand are popular with retirees and offer better infrastructure and amenities. Cambodia is an inexpensiveoption.
OUR PHILIPPINE HOUSE PROJECT: WINDOWS Windows – the heart of the house and a key part of our Philippine house building project. Our plan is to try to live as much as possible without air conditioning in this steamy tropical climate. Therefore, our eight main windows are unusually big, 2.4 meters wide (almost eight feet) and 1.6 meters (over five feet) high. OUR PHILIPPINE HOUSE PROJECT Our roofing is said to be “Galvalume” coated, that is coated with a mixture of aluminum and zinc which is supposed to be more durable than ordinary galvanized steel. Supposedly the paint is applied in a Taiwan factory. This 6mm material is widely used in SEWERAGE/SEPTIC/DRAINAGE SYSTEMS IN THE PHILIPPINES The installation and maintenance of drainage systems (along with roads and water systems), is a one of the major responsibility of local government. This is a new sewer/drainage system in Villa, Iloilo City. It drains directly into the Batiano River. From a public health perspective, this is progress. It gets septage and storm water out of OUR PHILIPPINE HOUSE PROJECT The granite we selected. Here’s what it looks like installed: Granite installed. This “Jun Li” granite is from China, as is most granite for sale in the Philippines. The pattern is called “weave white”. The price per 60cm by 220cm slab was P3,990. We required four slabs to do our kitchen and a small counter in our bathroom for atotal
SOCIAL SECURITY DIRECT DEPOSIT IN THE PHILIPPINES Security Bank – $5.00. United Coconut Planters Bank (UCPB) – $4.00 to $6.00. Metrobank – $3.00. Philippine National Bank – $7.00. The banks with variable fees charge more for larger direct deposits. If you’d like to sign up for direct deposit in the Philippines go to the bank you have chosen and ask for the direct deposit enrollmentform.
WEIMA 3200 GENERATOR (GENSET) The price was P13,000. We bought it at New OK across from Robinson’s in Iloilo City. I have had very good luck with New OK, but the generator has not needed any service, so far. A FOREIGNER’S LIFE IN ILOILO CITY A foreigner’s life in Iloilo City. September 16, 2012 (June 23, 2015) Bob and Carol. Iloilo does not get nearly so many foreign tourists as Cebu and Manila. Places like Boracay, Dumaguete and Bohol see more tourists and have many more resident foreigners than Iloilo. Sometimes, I can spend the day in the city and not see anotherforeigner.
COST OF AIR CONDITIONING IN PHILIPPINES During the month we were gone, they used 239 kWh at 11.1631 per kWh or P2,721.36 or about $53. When we are home, running air conditioning, our bills are typically P5,250 ($103), so air conditioning costs us $50 per month. Keep this in mind when you read the manufacturer advertisements about inverter air conditioner power savings. COOL ROOF PHILIPPINES Concrete/hollow block houses with metal roofs are the norm in the Philippines and elsewhere in tropical Asia. Filipinos don’t build such houses out of ignorance. They have critical advantages. They resist typhoon damage. If they’re flooded, they can be cleaned out and used again. For the most part they are termite proof.MY PHILIPPINE LIFE

SEBASTE, ANTIQUE PROVINCE, PHILIPPINES Sebaste, Antique (207KM) is a unprepossessing jewel of a community. OUR RETIREMENT IN THE PHILIPPINES… MOST OF THIS BLOG WAS WRITTEN BEFORE THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC STRUCK. WE ARE CREATING A NEW SECTION TO GIVE UPDATES ON THE SITUATION IN THEPHILIPPINES
.
My wife and I chose the Philippines as our retirement home and lived here full time since 2006. Our future in Iloilo was sealed when bought a property and built a house outside of Iloilo City, in the small seaside town of Tigbauan,
about one hour west of the city proper. Iloilo City continues to be our increasing delightful and sophisticated center for shopping, medical care, dining and other urban amenities and necessities. We’ve posted an extensive account of our house buildingexperiences
and recommendations regarding purchasing property in the Philippines.Iloilo
City Riverside Esplanade We are pleased with Iloilo. The wonderful people are its treasure. Under normal circumstances adequate Medical careis
available and educational opportunities are extensive. Thousands of doctors, nurses and seamen are trained in Iloilo every year. There are decent restaurants, and you can find and buy most of what you need at the markets, numerous malls or the downtown commercial area. While we enjoy living in the Philippines, we try to present a balanced view of the pluses and minuses of retirement there. The Philippines is not an economy version of Hawaii. The Philippines is decidedly a developing country with all the limitations that suggests. Further, there are other affordable retirement destinations to consider. Malaysia and Thailand are popular with retirees and offer better infrastructure and amenities. Cambodia is an inexpensive option. On the plus side, many Filipinos speak some English and generally are friendly to foreigners. Be sure to read our short essay: “Reality Check: the Philippines – a tropical paradise for the retiree?“

February 8, 2014 at 4:35 pmHi Mark,
Thanks very much for your thoughtful comments. I am not unaware of the negatives in the Philippines. I think of my life here as floating on the surface of a pond. I know there are many dark evils in the deep, so I just try to stay on the surface and enjoy the sunshine and hope that none of the creatures below will bother with me. I stay home at night, am not involved in any business, I don’t loan money, don’t have girlfriends, don’t go to bars, try not to piss anyone off and stay away from politics. I try to be blissfully ignorant as I can. I try to enjoy the local color, warm climate, modest cost of living, our lovely neighborhood and especially the smiles, undeserved respect and friendliness I receive whenever I am out and about. This might be shallow, and even insensitive given all the problems here, but it’s my way of trying to avoid the pitfalls of life hereas a foreigner.
Thanks also for correcting me about mag-anak. I revised the post.Best regards,
Bob

I would start with the Gaisano Mall in Oton. If they don’t have them you could check out the stores in SM City. On Iznart Street in Iloilo City there are some fisherman supply stores. I think I saw life jackets there. The shops, as I recall it. are on the east side of Iznart between the monument and the public market. Carol and I lived in Lake Mary for awhile before we came to thePhilippines.

January 30, 2014 at 1:22 pmHi John,
Just enter on a tourist visa. You’ll have to go to an immigration office and renew it for an additional 59 day and then renew every 59 days. This will give you lots of time to refine your plans regarding visas. If you do marry a Philippine citizen you will be eligible to apply for a 13a permanent residence visa. While I appreciate your enthusiasm for your lady friend and your new life in the Philippines, and that you likely will brush-off any such advice, I suggest that you take things a bit more slowly, with respect to immigration, marriage and financial investments. It takes time to learn about a lady friend and her family and life in the Philippines. That said, we send your best wishes and would be glad to answer any questions you may have.Bob and Carol

We had lots of wind and rain but no real damage. However many communities further north an Panay Island were really devastated. Thanks for thinking of us. Bob and Carol Comments are closed. THIS SITE HELPFUL? THEN PLEASE BUY US A COFFEE!SUBSCRIBE VIA EMAIL
