Challenge coins are a longstanding military tradition. They’re somewhere between a medal and a shinier, cooler version of business cards. Fantasy seems to isolate the act to two belligerents, the slayer and the slain, at least as far as the consequences go. But the truth is that, in law-enforcement, counterinsurgency, and war, the ultimate act is the result of the efforts of dozens if not hundreds of people. Each is a participant. Each owns the experience.THERE IS NO THAT
It’s 2130 on a Saturday night, and I’m alone in my apartment, in front of my laptop. I can’t shake the feeling that there’s some amazing party, filled with fascinating people, somewhere nearby. Artists and intellectuals and adventurers, all mixing and charging the air with stories. I wasn’t invited. It’s a familiar feeling, one that took root in adolescence and never left me. I’ve decided not to do an Arisia 2012 roundup. It was a great con, but not particularly literary, and I’ve already tweeted most of the coolest costumes and party shots. I did have one great panel on the future of science-fiction, which felt a lot like sitting around with a bunch of old friends and kibitzing about something we all knew and loved (the best con panels are always that wayON LOVE - MYKE COLE
On Love. By Myke Cole February 18, 2013 Comms. Pat Rothfuss recently wrote a beautiful blog post on love. Go read it, then come back here. I’ll wait. The thing I like so much about that piece is Pat’s expansive definition of what constitutes love. The problem with culture is that it is in the business of sketching clan boundaries. I swear this post is about writing. I was doing one of my pay-it-forward chats the other day, and we were discussing how to create compelling characters. I argued that great characters were as flawed and complicated as we are. The person I was chatting with was kind enough to let me spin a fictional tale based on the challenges she faced in her own life. It was a neat exerMYKE COLE

NEBULA AWARDS WEEKEND Life is all perspective. That lesson got driven home this weekend, when I attended my first Nebula Awards weekend as a professional writer. When to Speak Up. By Myke Cole May 9, 2012 Comms. What do China Mieville, Orson Scott Card and Frank Miller have in common? They are all amazing writers whose work has fundamentally changed my life. The Scar, Ender’s Game, and The Dark Knight Returns are some of the most important books in my memory. They’ve shaped me as an artist and aperson.
