HOW TO VIDEOS: STABILITY TESTS One of the most basic stability tests is the Compression Test. It is quick and easy to do, but it only tests a small piece of snow. It is excellent at identifying weak layers in the snowpack and analyzing the balance between stress and strength. If playback doesn't begin shortly, try restarting your device. SPLITBOARDER TRIGGERED, CAUGHT AND KILLED IN BEEHIVE Notes. On February 14, 2021, two splitboarders triggered an avalanche in Beehive Basin north of Big Sky. They were skinning up the slope when they triggered the avalanche. Both members of the party were caught, but Boarder 1 was able to grab trees and not be buried. Boarder 2 was carried approximately 300 feet downslope where he hit atree and

The snowpack in the Centennials is remarkably similar to the Lionhead area outside West Yellowstone: 6 feet of snow at 9,200 feet. The stability will get worse with snow this weekend (19-21 March) because the surface snow is week and the new snow will not bond to it (near-surface facets). TRANSITIONS TO SPRING SNOW AVALANCHE PROBLEMS Spring Avalanche Problems. Both dry and wet avalanche problems exist during spring. Dry snow avalanches result from snow and wind-loading that form slabs and add weight to exceed the strength of the snowpack. Above freezing temperatures and more direct sun affect the other half of the stability equation, causing the snowpack to melt, get wet GALLATIN NATIONAL FOREST AVALANCHE CENTER 2007-2008 ANNUAL REPORT Gallatin National Forest AVALANCHE CENTER 10 East Babcock St., Bozeman, MT 59715 406.587.6984 www.mtavalanche.com GLOSSARY OF AVALANCHE TERMS The downwind side of an obstacle such as a ridge.
