MAKE RECYCLED HANDMADE PAPER WITH KIDS: TUTORIAL WITH PICTURES Handmade paper – ah – we’ve been wanting to make for months now. Finally, last week we accomplished this project. I can’t begin to express the sense of satisfaction and joy we all gained from this experience. By ‘all’, I mean Pari, I and even Avie! Glad we chose Saturday to do the second part KID-MADE NEWSPAPER: FUN AND MEANINGFUL WRITING IDEAS Making their own Newspaper can be a very stimulating two-way method of writing/communication for young learners who are able to read fluently and express themselves in writing. The newspaper would be a commentary on the real world in which she lives – the way she perceives. And, knowing that their perspective is being read and enjoyed by someonewho’s closely

It’s much much more than merely a way to colour for toddlers Recently, when in Simla, we Pari and I used crayons in a very fun way – by grating the crayons and then melting them. I’dspotted this

by Rashmie on June 20, 2019 A trip to my in-law’s couple of weeks back was different this year as compared to dozens of times that we’ve been before. Never before has Pari resisted going to Sagar. The question never raised. On the contrary, she’d look forward to Ajji’s dosas, sambar rice, the cow coming every morning at the gate, and the kids falling over each other to feed her bananas, water melon – whatever in sight. But, this time, she wasn’t keen when we started talking about the Sagar trip. And, then came a time when she vehemently opposed the idea. Even went on to say we’re forcing her when all she’d like to do is stay home with her cat. While we understood that she wanted to be in comfort zone – traveling seven hours by car to reach Sagar is not something she enjoys. But, it looked like there was more to it. Well, many reasons that don’t work in her favour existed earlier too – too many visitors to in-laws’ house – a constant stream, the obligation to attend functions and meet relatives; all the while people talking mostly in Kannada, no English or Hindi which are the languages she’s comfortable with. But, this time these factors seemed to weigh heavy for her. Too heavy to consider meeting grandparents. And, it had been a while she had met them. But, we kept insisting. Avie even told her at one point that Ajja (grandfather) has been keeping really unwell so we never know what the future holds. Considering this, she doesn’t have a choice, he said. But, she wouldn’t listen. I told her she wouldn’t have to visit relatives’ homes or entertain guests at home. She could be in her own space. We were planning to visit a Gau Shala (cow rescue shelter) there and she’d love it since she loves animals of all kinds. I also offered some bribes – we’ll stop at Cafe Coffee Day on route and she can enjoy her favourite coffee and chilly cheese toastiza (although she’s mostly vegan at home, she digs into some of her favourite vegetarian stuff from non-vegan days when outside home). All this thawed her. And then, my mom had a heart-to-heart chat with her. She started packing her suitcase late evening, while we had to take to the road early the next morning. As she packed her suitcase by 10 Pm or so and she and I were sitting next to each other, I didn’t exclusively mention to her how happy I was that she’s agreed to come along. So, she turns to me and asks, “you didn’t even ask me why I finally agreed and all. Do you care that I’m going with you.” I said calmly, “I more than care. Just the fact that you’re coming has enveloped me in peace. I don’t want to disturb this peace by discussing this matter any more, lest you change your mind!” I was really hoping that nothing would make her change her mind now. I wasplaying safe!
And, I’m more than glad I offered the bribe and the flexibilities rather than giving up on her. I knew in my heart of hearts that even when she’s so sure she’ll have a terrible time, she’ll enjoy the stay at many levels. Which she did. Some experiences were life-long memories. Some were boring afternoons. Some were outright fun. If she wasn’t there in all those places where I knew she’d enjoy, I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy to the fullest. Such is a mother’s heart. More than my ache, she’d have missed a life-time of loving, tender memories. Loving and flexible, firm at times, intuitive mostly – that’s a mother’s heart, and her power. It’s this intuition that we need to safeguard. Because, the society at large is intent on robbing us of this gem. If I’d followed a so-called ‘unschooling’ or more so – ‘radical unschooling’ principle I’d tend to think – oh, let my child follow her instincts, her interests and all that. Suggesting her or pursuing her would be akin to forcing her against her own will or grain. It’s akin to controlling and manipulating. And, all this could be true in so many situations. That’s what parents do – brain-wash, control, manipulate, negotiate, cajole, threaten, shame – all this so that the child would behave as per their wish andexpectation.
So, that unschooling principle – “let the child be; let him or her follow their own instincts” is valuable. Worth considering. We don’t want to dismiss a child’s natural instinct or inclination. We want them to take clues from their own bodies and spirits. We want them to be able thinkers and decision-makers. They ARE way more wiser than we think them to be. And, in our unschooling journey, we’ve trusted our children to be. But, ultimately they are humans too, like we all are. And, we all have our moods and moments of inertia, distrust, complacence, low-confidence. This is when we just need to nudge and even prod each other out of slumber and stuck-spot. This is not anti-unschooling, anti-free-spirit or anti-anything. It is rather opening up a window to let in sunlight into a dark room. I disagree with those unschooling or radical-unschooling proponents who stretch well-intentioned principles into dogmas and diktats that are so misleading for the parents. I’ve seen how some parents shut their intuition to follow these dogmas blindly. Unschooling is totally about being your child’s partner, not her adversary,
as Sandra Dodd, the unschooling pioneer says. Yes, we’ve got to be their partners, not controllers, not manipulators. The “I’m the boss out here.” Or, “I know what’s best for my child” attitude does not help. In this scenario, I was pursuing from her space. For I knew how much she’d enjoy this one opportunity to interact with the animals, which she longs for, but hasn’t got much otherwise. There are dozens of scenarios where she just wouldn’t want to accompany us – to a friend’s place, to an event, to a location we’re traveling to. I share the details with her and she takes a call. Often it turns out that the place or event was really not worth attending. And, I find myself thinking, “Pari’s got clarity about what she wants and doesn’t want.” Ofcourse there are times, when it turns out quite like she would have enjoyed. But then, there’ll always be some losses and some gains. The overall gain is to let the child take decisions, be discerning, and follow their own intuition. And, yes, we follow our intuition. But, how do we know it’s our intuition speaking and not deep-seated fears, conditioning and parental expectations of how our child should be? Well, that zen wisdom will come from years of introspection and self-reflection. It’s not an easy road at all…. Pari is now already looking forward to the next Sagar trip because she’s missing those cows and calfs and wants to feed them the fresh and tender corn grass. All four kids – Pari, Sufiana, and Asmita and Arya (my sister-in-law’s kiddos) were never seen so happy and joyous as they were in the gau shala that evening. Besides, they all bonded so beautifully over the one week. Arya, the youngest would seek out Pari no matter where she would be. And, she didn’t seem to mind the intrusion in her privacy. On the contrary she would look forward to he jumping onto her full body showering her with kisses. Pari and Asmita (5 years apart) shared quite a one-on-one relationship almost as though they were peers. They played cards all the time, shared jokes and had the entire house echoing with peels of laughter. Asmita and Sufi shared a special bond too. And, not to forget Ajji’s food that Pari is so fond of. And the ever-so-patient and kind Ajji would serve her hot dosas even when she came down at the breakfast table at 11 in the noon. She could be quite an unschooling grandma, I feel. I’m eternally grateful to her, this amazing woman for her physical and spiritual strength, her equanimity in the face of troubled times, her never complaining attitude. She and I share a love for meditation, bhajans, chants, talking about Himalayas saints. So, we would sing and chant together in the kitchen. Mummy also narrates beautiful tales from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Other than that, shopping in Sagar is always fun. Avie and I go around this small town market for wrought iron tawa, steel tiffin boxes, and such knick knacks. What you’d get for thousands of rupees on amazon, you’ll get there for couple of hundreds. So, this time again, like last year, I got a heavy iron tawa (roti pan), a heavy-duty kadhai (deep wok), couple of chappals for Sufiana and myself. Goa is really dull when it comes to shopping, and what you get is of no taste andpricey to boot.
Ah, and we bought Pari the gold loop earrings that she’d been wanting to for a while. She readily contributed the 2000 rupees she got from her Ajji, and we funded the rest. And then I wanted to joke, “see what all you’d have missed if you hadn’t come.” But, I didn’t, for I didn’t want to sound like, “mama is always right.”. It was she who said, “it was nice I came, mamma. Next time, I want to visit more gau shalas.” And, some lovely memorable pictures. And, there’s a funny video atthe end!

MAKING NATURAL WIND CHIME AND COMMUNICATING WITH TREES by Rashmie on June 13, 2019 We had an interesting guest recently. Among various things (fermented foods, meditation, ashram life, past lives, Gandhiji, his Guru) that we discussed and learned from him, one was communicating with trees. This subject instantly struck a chord with me because I have a LOVE AND CURIOSITY FOR TREES for as long as I can remember. He shared briefly how one can communicate with trees and that one does not need to be spiritually evolved or something like that to be able to do so. One only needs to be open to send and receive energy, feel intuitively by surrendering the mind and tap into the universal sound of Omkar. And, of-course one needs to practice this over and over again to be able to connect to nature at will.{ 0 comments

UNSCHOOLING ART: COLOURFUL CREATURES PAPER MOBILE by Rashmie on March 13, 2019 Art has been the central theme of our unschooling learning journey. I’d say my children have explored and learned mostly through one or other medium of art and craft. Besides every-day art, with dozens of festivals, birthdays and anniversaries spread out all through the year, there’s no escaping art and things that one can make. Thank God for art, our souls are less dusty, I think, and minds more relaxed. For, there have been days and there have been things, I’d have torn my hair apart or screamed my lungs out. But, I didn’t. Art, poetry, music, mantras, books, movies have come to my rescue….!
And, the kids have never been bored. On the contrary… I wish I had the enthusiasm to share with you all here all the fascinating art decor and art gifts we’ve made on various occasions. But, I didn’t. I got lazy. Sigh… This time though, I felt this beautiful mobile that Sufiana and I made together had to be shared. I can see how many small hands would love to make something like this as a gift for their family or friends.{ 0 comments

VALENTINE’S SUPERMOON: AN ODE TO MOTHER-DAUGHTER DYNAMICS by Rashmie on February 20, 2019 6:45 Pm on the terrace I chance upon the North-eastern sky Caught unawares by her beauty I let out a near-freaky sigh My pupils widen, my heart quickens, My soul’s eyes are transfixed There she sits, the celestial queen – February’s supermoon, Valentine divine The biggest that’ll be in 2019. I feel blessings rain down soaking me in her spectacular shine. Feels like a sign – this invitation to sip the cosmic wine. But, I can’t have it all alone… Not when my daughter’s in the room next door So, before I can drink more of this, I run to knock at her closed door; oh she mustn’t miss. Irked that I interfere again, She protests why I’m calling out her name, I tell, no urge her to come out just once, For, I’ve got to show something unspoken, unheard Disinterested, she steps out. I take her by her hand, and make her stand facing the divine rain. “Look at that! How beautiful! I think she’s the full moontonight.”
Can you quickly check on your mobile.” Takes a second for her to confirm; swift as she is on her gadget, quite unlike me.
A mad mystic that I am, in a daze that I am… I beseech her we must pray together awhile, She folds her hands. For two seconds, to be sure. And, before I can catch my breath, She’s gone, shuts her door – again. I sigh for a fraction of a second. Let go mamma…..let go, enjoy your own wine, this fleeting alone-time. Get drunk woman, get a spiritual high, for isn’t it all that matters, under this gorgeous Goan night sky? That night at 10, I knock at her door again. She opens, quickly takes me to her desk Shows stacks and stacks she’d printed and cut – Pictures, postcards, bookmarks. Had been working at this when I’d earlier knocked at her door. Korean Pop – her lifeline these days, Laughing and crying to their music, their personas, their stories Behind closed doors, Creating art journals, posting on instagram, exchanging letters across countries cold and warm with pen pals who share the same passion and charm. I understand you darling, I’m trying hard. But, those hours of closed doors… are creating a chasm. Teenage is a quaint time. For daughters and mothers alike. Both fight their raging and sulking hormones, struggling to make sense of the monthly strike. As the moon holds her sway, they remain oblivious to the pull. Bleeding in silence, crying hoarse; connected in grief, despite closed doors. Be sensitive, girl. Be sensitive. Not to your ego,
not towards society, not to their opinions,or their judgement.
Be sensitive to nature. Live in tune with her elements. Listen to your body. Your voice within. You’re not just a bleeding body, wake up to this fact You’re a Goddess, yes YOU. You’re a Shakti incarnate.{ 1 comment

COCO. LOVING CAN HURT, LOVING CAN HEAL by Rashmie on October 23, 2018 I’d brought Coco home on an instinct. My kids have been requesting, demanding a pet for more than three years now. Their yearning was so intense, they are not at fault to have nurtured this thought that they’re stuck with this pet-averse woman who happens to be theirmother.
But, my conditioning didn’t allow me to let go and bring home an animal to love and care for and play with. I love animals to bits, I always have. I could never ever bear to see they getting hurt or anybody hurting them. As a kid, when children around me teased dogs, caught butterflies and not released them quickly, I’d feel a stab in my heart. I would shoo them angrily, and lecture them about compassion and kindness for such helpless beings. Yet, the idea of bringing one home never crossed my mind. This was family conditioning I guess, or past karma? Besides, my mom was a sucker for cleanliness. Her home had to be spotless, well organised, uncluttered. She couldn’t fathom keeping a cat or a dog and cleaning after them. I’m more than glad that both Pari and Sufiana never got affected (read tainted) by this conditioning of mine. Pari had some fears initially. But, she got over it quickly. Sufi, even when she was a few months old, was always fascinated by the cats that visited the backyard in our rustic home in South Goa.—-
I can never forget that fateful June afternoon when I walked with Sufi to that corner in our neighbourhood where my girls had been playing with two kittens. It had been a week that they spotted these kittens. They would go out every evening with friends to play with the two siblings, but never once did they mention to me about bringing them home. They knew all too well what the answer would be. Never in their wildest dreams they’d have guessed that their pet-averse mom would bring them home. To keep for ever. With a basket of kittens in my hands when I declared this to Pari, I smiled and Sufi grinned. Pari was euphoric in her joy and disbelief. She was gesticulating wildly and loudly, “Oh mama, you really brought them home? You mean we can keep them for ever? You’re sure you want to do this. We’ll have to manage all that potty and sushu.” All this and more. Her eyes literally popped out and her heart beats I could listen. That was the day. And, the next five months changed my life. Our lives. That little being, who Pari named Coco, brought a tsunami of love into our lives. He drew out from within us the ocean of true, unconditional love that a human being is capable of giving to another being. He mirrored to us our true nature. The true nature of our soul, that remains unpolluted by murkiness or darkness. I can say, no, claim that I’ve never loved another being so selflessly, purely, unconditionally. And, I’ve never felt as much joy as I’ve felt receiving love and reciprocation from Coco. That angel, he treated me like I’m his mother. He would come running into my lap and start kneading as if he’s kneading his mum’s milk glands to direct milk from those. He’d lead me and only me to the corner where his food bowl lay; wait for me to fill his bowl and not start eating until I’d petted him, showered him with mushy names and loving talk and sounds. At night, when I sat with a book or in front of a laptop, he’d curl up in my lap. If I moved my hands away from his body, he’d look up at me as if to say, ‘I need your loving touch and the soothing voice’. My voice and the things I said to him, “coco, my zaanu, my gudda (toy), cookie zana”, visibly soothed him. He’s shut his eyes and just feel my touch and feel thesounds of my voice.
That was me. A being who was too scared to fully pet a cat or a dog, let alone pick them up, cuddle and shower kisses. A pet-averse person had been transformed beyond recognition. And, Pari was immensely proud of the new me. She looked at me fondly when I cradled Coco like my own baby, with his face to my bosom. Talking of Pari and Sufi – well, these girls knew no bounds with their love for Coco. Coco was their lifeline. They fought with each other to be with him. Pari slept with him, and he’d cozy up inside her Tshirt to be against her body in the same bed at night. The first face Sufi chose to see in the morning was Coco’s, and the first face Pari kissed in the morning was Coco’s. This girl, who gets grossed out by her own fallen hair on the bathroom floor, cleaned Coco’s poo and pee and vomits without the slightest discomfort. The first body contact and embrace I had in the morning, and then at night was Coco’s. Early morning when Avie and I did yoga on the terrace, Coco would sit close to us watching the birds, and every once a while he would sneak up into our lap for some love and warmth. We’d tell him gently that he needs to sit by himself while we finished yoga, and make him sit in another corner. He never protested, but was eternally patient. People say that cats are unreliable or selfish or aloof. We can’t testify to this. Sufi would go after him – to love him and cuddle him – umpteenth times in a day. She was literally after him all the time. When she picked him up like an adult would pick a child, he’d whimper once or twice and then stay there patiently. Occasionally, he would place his two paws on her cheek trying to tell her she needs to back off. Nothing more that that. He never so much as scratched even though he had all the time and calibre to do so. And, Sufi knew no fears when with Coco. She knew she could trust him fully. When we took Coco for neutering at six months, our little boy was so scared that he wouldn’t get off Pari’s embrace. He literally hid inside her. And then, when he came home, due to sedation and pain, he couldn’t walk two steps without collapsing – it pained us so much, and we regretted in that instant for having him go through all that. We kept in touch with the vet to make sure nothing unusual was happening to him. And then, in a closed room, I made him calm down and gave him Reiki healing for an hour. After receiving Reiki, he slept for hours, and when he woke up in the evening, we couldn’t believe that he walked down the steps all by himself without any visible signs of pain. He even ventured out in the garden to poo. This angel left us five days back. And, we’re in a shock of our lives. In denial even. The home is empty, hearts are shattered. It’s been tough to come to terms with it. Least of all for Pari. And me. Coco was her life. He was my baby. It wasn’t easy to leave him in a friend’s custody when we had to go out of town for a week. It’s interesting and eerie that Pari got a number of signs to not go. Till the last moment she kept asking us to cancel her ticket. And, for me, it wasn’t easy that I would be away for a week without him. What befuddles me is I reach the destination and take the first few steps out of the airport and a strong sadness engulfs me. I find myself thinking, “why did I plan a week-long outing. It’s too long to stay without Coco. O my God, how will this time pass.” This thought for a travel-crazy person! It was 2 PM when we reached Indore. At 5 or so, Pari’s friend sent a message, “Pari, your cat has ventured into the jungle.” We were concerned, Pari and I. We knew that side of the jungle in our neighbourhood was so dense, one could not set foot even. Avie, my hubby, kept reminding us to send good vibes to Coco and not fearful energy. I knew this makes sense. This is what we practise in our daily lives. I know thoughts matter, that thoughts carry energy. I started praying and visualising that Coco is safe, that he’d immediately come back from the jungle to the friend’s house. Couple of hours pass. We try to reach the friend desperately to hear back about Coco. At 8 Pm or so, she says he’s still not come back. By now, I find myself thinking that he’s probably lost his way home. Night passes. Early morning, I call my mom – she lives close-by – to unlock our home and wait there with Pari’s friends so Coco would come back there. Pari and I couldn’t sit still. By now, Pari was planning to return home alone. That would have been her first ever flight journey all by herself. But, she didn’t blink once. She said, she just needs to be home, “if I go there, I know Coco will come back.” We decided to wait for another couple of hours. Got out into the Indore city for a glimpse. It was around 12 Pm. We ate something in the Rajwada area, which is known for its old-city vibes, peculiar markets and street food. But, the pain and concern in our hearts was all too palpable to allow us to enjoy even for a moment. Just then, my brother called. Avie stepped aside some metres from us. And, I knew. My brother had sent couple of pictures of a cat. Body. Even as the photo was loading, I knew. My heart wasn’t beating. It had nearly stopped. My throat was parched like a barren desert. When the photo came up, Pari reluctantly said yes it does look like Coco’s. But, it can’t be so bad, the body, given that it had only been one night. No matter what, we took the autorikshaw back to the service apartment we’d booked. Packed the luggage and called for a taxi to the airport. We couldn’t have stayed for another moment. Once at the airport, we dared to look at the photo closely. Pari zoomed into the face, which was almost covered with insects. She spotted the brown dot on his right cheek. There was nothing more to see, think or do. We looked into each others’ eyes, and saw ghastly expressions there. I broke down howling, tears streaming incessantly. Avie took Sufi away, while I embraced Pari in an eternity. We were both wailing oblivious to the crowd that might have been staring at us. Never before had we felt so intimately bonded with each other, I think. The journey home was the most difficult I’d ever taken. As I entered the home premises, his presence haunted me every moment, everywhere. He’d sit there in the vegetable bed, under the shade of the papaya tree. He’d sit under the car, when wanting relief from any interaction. He’d play on the steps with his furry friend voodoo. Voodo, who loved him so much, Coco often got overwhelmed with him. Coco was the adventurous soul, he liked to wander the whole neighbourhood, explore every nook and cranny. But, he loved us, and he loved his home, our home. In the mornings, when I opened the door to let him out so he could poo or pee, he’d mostly not want to go. He wanted to be with me or Avie. Cuddle with us, feel us with his angelic eyes closed. I’m a sensitive human, alright, but Coco taught me to feel at another level altogether. No matter how playful he would be, if one of us went and cuddled him and touched him lovingly with mushy words, he’d immediately close his eyes and feel the feelings, the touch, the sounds. He was most connected to his soul – the divine light of it – that I’m sure of. Now that he’s gone, what do I do? My eyes search for him everywhere – in the home, outside, into the sky, in eternity and within my own depths. Pari and I exchange glances – a silent understanding between us that yes, this moment you and I are thinking about him. You and I hear him. We both want to cuddle him so badly. Kiss him. The first 3-4 days were a nightmare for Pari. She was inconsolable. He used to spend a lot of time with her, in her room. She’d make him sleep in her bed in the afternoon hours, while she’d be art journaling the whole afternoon and then late evening. She couldn’t stop imagining him in her bed and hence banned her room. We chanted for Coco, he has been in my prayers and meditation. My eyes still wander off outside into the garden in hope that he may have returned. Initially it seemed that Sufi was handling this tremendous loss very well. She did say of-course that she’s missing Coco. But, she wasn’t looking at it as a complete loss. For, I’d told her that God has taken Coco to His home, for Coco wasn’t well. Today – after 4-5 days nearly, she’s aching for him. She’s been repeatedly saying, “I’m missing Coco, when will God send him back.” Then, at one point she exclaimed, “Will God send Coco with new fur colour and new body?” I said, “yes, you’re right. Coco might come back in new look. And because he’ll be coming from God’s home, he’d be our angel. You can call him ‘angel’.” And, I saw a glint in her eyes when I mentioned that name. Angel, he truly was. An angel who made me see the divinity within myself, guided me to higher and higherconsciousness.
Love triumphs. Love draws out the true nature of the soul. My mother, who never knew what it is like to physically love an animal, had grown to love Coco so much her worries and anxiety and pain would disappear for the few minutes that she held him in her lap. He would gently wrap his jaws around her palm and wrist and she sat there content, feeling special that he considers her his own. Another soul, a little girl of eight, my niece – Sarah, is transformed by Coco too. Her fear has been replaced by sheer magical love. Oh, what a feeling to be loved unconditionally, and to love someone unconditionally. I feel blessed to realize what it’s like to love another being like this. And, this song, the words aptly describe my emotions right now. So, what if the one I loved is not a human, it’s a beautiful, angelic soul from the animal world: Loving can hurt, loving can hurt sometimes But it’s the only thing that I know When it gets hard, you know it can get hard sometimes It is the only thing makes us feel alive{ 0 comments

BAKING SOURDOUGH BREAD AND SEEKING JOY IN FOOD, HOME AND HEARTH by Rashmie on July 1, 2018 A day before his 43rd birthday, Avie (hubby) baked his first sourdough bread. Infact, his first bake ever. In the middle of all that typhoidagony
that had engulfed us all, it felt like a life-giving breath – the opportunity he grabbed to indulge this new passion. A passion that has grown with time, fast and furious – to understand how food affects body and mind in good and bad ways; to get to the root cause of disease; to discover alternative ways of cooking, to focus on elimination of toxins from the body rather than chasing nutrition, and to enjoy food that will nurture, heal, sustain.{ 0 comments

JACKFRUIT DOSA AND IDLI: SAVOUR THE TRADITIONAL FLAVOUR! by Rashmie on May 4, 2018 A hot dreamy afternoon. The air’s filled with sleep. And, a smell so distinctive. So musky. Rustic sweet. It’s the Jackfruit. Yes, that giant of a fruit you’ll find in vegetable markets these days in most parts of India, especially the western ghats, along side mangoes, jamuns, leechi and other seasonalfruits.
Nothing can beat mangoes. It’s the king of all fruits. All right. But, spare a thought for the jackfruit. It has the potential to serve world hunger, if used intentionally and marketed well. It packs a punch when it comes to nutritional value. Why just nutrition. This fruit can appease your taste buds if you’d be willing to try out its unique flavour and texture.{ 0 comments

OF BISONS, CATAPULTS AND QUAINT FRIENDSHIPS by Rashmie on April 8, 2018 The pictures here are of my father-in-law’s thota (farm/garden) in Kaligere, near Sagara in Karnataka. This beautiful 8-acres space with a house that’s half a century old at leas, is one place we all long to visit. Avie (hubby) spent the best part of his childhood here and carries a sea of memories and scores of stories. He’s shared his Kaligere tales with me and the kids with such vivid details , nostalgia and fondness that we all feel attached to this space and to the little boy that he was as though they were part of our ownchildhood.

OF LIFETIME RELATIONSHIPS AND CIRCLE OF SISTERS by Rashmie on March 26, 2018 Together now, in every joy and celebration, song and dance, fights and brawls. One is the hair stylist to the other three, another a dance diva who teaches the cool steps and the coolest songs, the third and fourth – the firecrackers – their antics and repartees are a treat to eyes and ears. So, we have quite a house full over here. And, we feel let them be together – just one more hour, one more day, one more month or an year longer. The bonds they’ll form now, will last a lifetime. Who knows where life will take them, but when we’ll be gone and they’ll be grown, they’ll have each other to share their hearts, to gossip and bicker, to exchange childhood stories with, to laugh out loud, to exchange mamma’s sarees with, to let their hair down, to hold a get-together of common friends, to be each others’sounding boards.
I wish their bond grows stronger and deeper and they see each other with kind and fond eyes. Inspite of we the adults and our complexities, inspite of the worldly prejudices and myopic views, inspite of who goes on to become what. Amen.{ 0 comments
