BOUNDS AND VECTORS
In the past couple of years I’ve spent many hours working in this beloved industry of the web. But before I jump into a maniacal nostalgic rant – I’ve backspaced a lot here – I’ll actually tell you about what I’m finding right now, as I look at my company, myself and the world around me. HOW TO USE APPLE’S INTERFACE BUILDER EFFECTIVELY First things first, I am not a ‘hardcore programmer’, I pretend to know what I’m doing when I have a bunch of code in front of me, and stuff seems to work out quite well (and if it doesn’t, I’ll waste twenty hours trying to find the file I should’ve included) Let’s just settle on the fact that I code from a user perspective, which will not end me up with the ‘best project PROJECT DOCUMENTS; THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE BORING Writing project documents isn’t the sexiest way to spend your day. THE FLOW OF MARK-UP
Back in 1997, when I was 12, I started fiddling with HTML in notepad. Those were the days when Tripod and Geocities webpages were the status quo and Google was nothing more than a blip on the radar. Straight off I had a thing for writing valid mark-up, not having a single clue what it really stood for. LESS THAN 10000 BYTES OF CSS3 MEMORY You thought you were done with CSS3 Memory? I thought so too. Then 10K Apart came along, and I felt like finding out if I could optimize it to 10 kilobytes. Well, what do you know? It’s possible. The original size was 120k (excluding typekit), and it got optimized to 9.3k. (It’s effectively 4k with gzip compression.) “CONTENT EVERYWHERE, BUT NOT A DROP TO DRINK” Most are stories written with little or no research done. The problem with the content rush is twofold. First, no one — and I mean no one — can possibly be an expert in all the things they’re attempting to cover. BUILDING A BETTER WEB IN BELFAST November 5th, 2009 was the day Andy McMillan had planned for Build Conference. And however stressful the last few days up to that must have been – some of which I noticed – he ended up creating the best conference I had attended the whole year. BUILD CONFERENCE 2010 The second edition of Build Conference has just ended. Mr. Andy McMillan had set up a whole week of events with the conference in the middle. And it was absolutely amazing. From cocktails renamed to awful old school HTML tags, to the most stressful pub quiz in the world, to great, outgoing speakers that gave us ample time and opportunity for achat with them.
DESIGNING FOR YOURSELF As you might have noticed, on one of the many different channels of communication, the past few days, or weeks even, I have been working on a new version of my tiny personal website. WHAT IF APPLE MADE A PHOTOSHOP ALTERNATIVE? A few minutes back, Neven Mrgan wrote two tweets that set some sparks off in my head: I’d love to know if there’s a reasonably complex, custom-looking app developed without Photoshop. Apple delivers all components except that.BOUNDS AND VECTORS

PHONETIC CONTRAST
Words with low phonetic contrast are generally single syllable words (eg. Build, Air, etc.) or two-syllable words where the syllables have the same speech sound, or a soft tone, also have a low contrast feel to them (eg. Burger, Phone, Move.) Without getting too theoretical about it, I believe the parts of a word that raise the contrast can beTHE FLOW OF MARK-UP

I am a digital product builder who likes to create things by mashing together design, engineering, and business strategy. Currently, I am a designer at Brex, where I focus on “Special Projects” (big bets that we believe will have an meaningfully positive effect on our customers, starting with our mobile product.) Previously, I led the digital product and design team at Glossier, worked on a myriad of efforts and product teams at Facebook, and was one of the first designers at Instagram. As a personal project, I am building Shoebox , exploring a simple way of photo hosting and sharing. When I am not behind a computer, I like to enjoy the California sun, and spend time advising others on their careers, their teams, and their businesses.Read More

REFLECTING ON A YEAR OFF Today marks one year of taking time off. I deeply realize I have been very fortunate to have this incredible privilege, but I must say that I genuinely didn't feel its importance until about3-4 months ago.
This note is an edited version of a thread I wrote on Twitter which reflected on the good and the bad of a year off, as well as lessonslearned.
