Happy #BackyardBirdingSunday 🦅 and happy May🌸! May is, in theory, the month when spring is in full swing🌼🌱✨. But, that doesn’t mean there aren’t birds to be seen🐦🦆🦉! It’s National Scrapbook Day✨! Scrapbooking📖 was a very popular activity in the 19th century and a fun way to pass the time! Similar to modern day collage, people would cut up newspapers and catalogues to make dream houses🏠 and dream rooms, or make silly things like pasting the head of a real person’s photograph onto the body of an animal. Scrapbooking was also an activity that the Mitchell Family engaged in! Maria and her father both scrapbooked, but it was her sister Phebe who scrapbooked a lot of Maria’s things after her death. Here you can see a section of a scrapbook page made by Maria featuring one of her well-loved Dome Parties at Vassar College when she was a professor💫🔭. #MariaMitchellAssociation #MariaMitchell #nantucket #WomenInScience #NationalScrapbookDay #Scrapbooking#History Button

Did you know that out of all the named craters on the moon🌖, only 2% are named after women? One of the lunar craters within the 2% is named after Maria Mitchell! Artist, Bettina Forget, creates illustrations of various lunar craters🌑. These craters are often named for scientists, engineers, and explorers🔭🔬. While creating artwork, Forget began to ask the question, “who are these people? And how many are women?” She was shocked to discover that out of 1,578 moon craters that had been named at that time, only 32 were named after women. This inspired her project, “Women With Impact,” drawing each crater named after a woman, including Mitchell’s💫! Pigments can be extracted by chopping up and soaking leaves🍃, orange peels🍊or flowers💐 in solvents like rubbing alcohol or alcohol-based mouthwash. Magic markers and paints use pigments. One phenomenon used to separate chemical compounds is liquid chromatography🌈. You can experiment with this at home by checking out this activity on our website or the link in our bio! 🌟🔬✨ #MariaMitchellAssociation #MariaMitchell #nantucket #ACKSciFest #ScientificResearch #UMassBoston #ACK #NantucketCommunitySchool #DIY Button*

First, no woman should say, ‘I am but a woman.’ But a woman! What more can you ask to be. Born a woman, born with the average brain of humanity, born with more than the average heart, if you are mortal what higher destiny could you have. No matter where you are nor what you are, you are a power. Your influence is incalculable, personal influence is always underrated by the person. We are all centres of spheres—we see the portions of the sphere above us, and we see how little we affect it. We forget the part of the sphere around and before us—it extends just as far every way.” - Maria Mitchell #MariaMitchellAssociation #MariaMitchell #nantucket #WomenInStem #womenshistorymonth Button*
National Invasive Species Awareness Week technically ended on Friday, but today’s #backyardbirdingsunday post shares the spirit of the event🦅🦆. The image here is of a European starling, a well-known invasive species in North America🌎. Here’s what MMA Ornithologist, Ginger Andrews has to say! “The European starling is likely the most common “invasive” bird we have on Nantucket, but not necessarily the most injurious. It is currently declining. Their harm consists in out-competing native cavity-nesters for breeding sites, voracious appetite in agricultural areas, and roosting in messy swarms over water supplies. Although a group is referred to as “a murmuration” their extreme chattiness might better be called a cacophony. But some of their harm has been mitigated by the introduction of nest boxes and bluebird trails. They have many endearing qualities, however. Once sold as cage birds in Europe, Mozart kept one as a beloved and musical pet. As mimics they can pick up human words. They are also used subjects for research into flight mechanics, sensory perception, and endocrinology. So, as invaders go, they could be worse.” 🔬📋🐦 #MariaMitchellAssociation #MariaMitchell #BackYardBirding #nantucket #birdstagram #birding #BirdOn #NISAW #InvasiveSpecies #NationalInvasiveSpeciesAwarenessWeekButton

Did you know that green fleece🌿 (Codium fragile) is an invasive species? Originally from the western Pacific🌊, this common species of seaweed is especially dangerous to Nantucket Bay Scallops. Codium spores can settle on live scallops and grow into large, boyant fronts, which can then be washed ashore by waves with the live scallop still attached! 🏖❕ Interested in learning more about bay scallops and the importance of them in Nantucket? We can’t participate in National Invasive Species Awareness Week without taking the opportunity to discuss the European green crab!🦀 Green crabs are an invasive species that threaten Nantucket’s eelgrass habitats during hunting & burrowing activities, outcompete native crab species for habitat and food, and eat local shellfish including Nantucket bay scallops and clams 🌊🐠🐚 Their diverse diet🦐, tolerance of a large range of ocean temperatures🌊, and long larval period makes them excellent at conquering new environments. Green crabs are generally regarded as one of the top five most invasive species in the marine environment 🦀❕ In August 2020, we launched the first ever Nantucket Green Crab Week✨ with the Nantucket Land Council to teach about “The Green Crab Problem” and launch a Citizen Science project📋 To learn more about Nantucket Green Crab Week and our research, check out the link in our bio! 🌊🦀🌟 #MariaMitchellAssociation #MariaMitchell #NISAW #InvasiveSpecies #NationalInvasiveSpeciesAwarenessWeek #GreenCrabs #NantucketGreenCrabWeek #NantucketLandCouncil Button*
It’s National Invasive Species Awareness Week! As a part of the Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative, the Invasive Plant Species Committee🌿 is an on-island collaboration of people and organizations interested in and actively pursuing non-native invasive plant species identification, management, research, education, and eradication 🪴🔬🌟 What exactly defines an invasive plant species? 🌱🤔 Invasive species are non-native species that have been introduced to a new area (accidentally or purposefully) that grow aggressively, reproduce rapidly crowding out other plants, and are difficult to remove once established🍃 Some examples in Nantucket include Japanese knotweed and garlic mustard. Are you interested in learning more about how to manage invasive plant removal or how to landscape with native plants? It’s the first #backyardbirdingsunday of the new year! 🎉🎉 For most birders, a new year means a new list 🗒 Keeping a year list is a way of summing up — it’s fun to look back at what was seen, and when. With a new list, everything is new. It makes everything exciting again—the first Cardinal, the first Chickadee, even the first Grackle! ✨🦆🦉✨ So, how to keep a list that’s both interesting and useful? It can be a first-seen list with the date, a yard list, an island list, a county, state, country, or world list. The basic information is the species, place, and date. Some birders use printed lists, some have special books📖, some deface their field guides📒, some just scribble on the back of an envelope📝 Some do it electronically on e-Bird, which is now the largest citizen-science database in the world. But no matter how done, it’s also fun 🐦🌻 #MariaMitchellAssociation #MariaMitchell #BackYardBirding #nantucket #birdstagram #birding #BirdOn #BirdListButton
