To shore up oyster farming the Marin Agricultural Land Trust granted a long-term easement to the Hog Island Oyster Company. MALT was founded in 1980 to protect family farms from mounting development pressures. In the decades since its founding, MALT continues to advance farmland protection, as well as support the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices throughout West Marin. WHY THE LATEST MALT AGRICULTURAL CONSERVATION EASEMENT IS MALT recently closed an agricultural conservation easement with Hog Island Oyster Company (Hog Island) and its 250-acre Leali Ranch. This particular easement is especially noteworthy for a number of reasons, including that it’s: The first MALT easement that includes amariculture aspect.

MALT buys agricultural conservation easements from landowners in order to protect their land as farmland, compensating landowners fairly for this protection. As part of this legal agreement, MALT performs annual monitoring visits on each property, consults with landowners about permitted uses under the easement and offers technical assistance for natural resource concerns.
