EVENTS: TOURISMUS MAINZ People in Mainz enjoy celebrating and laughing. Here is an overview of the biggest and most beautiful events.ROMAN MAINZ
Roman theatre. The discoveries made during the construction of new paths to the citadel in Mainz from 1914 to 1916 were beyond imagination. One had come across an antique stage theatre of gigantic dimensions. The rows of spectators offered space for around ten thousand visitors - ten times more than would fit into the Great Houseof the Mainz
CITADEL: TOURISMUS MAINZ The citadel is among the most important monuments of Mainz, and one of the few remaining modern era citadels in Germany. Here, 2000 years of history are present to this day – from the Roman theatre to the Luther Church erected in the 20th century. NEW SYNAGOGUE: TOURISMUS MAINZ Mainz is one of the oldest Jewish communities in Europe. In the Middle Ages, the city was the centre of Jewish teaching and religion. The main synagogue, built in 1912, was plundered and set on fire during the pogrom night from 9 to 10 November 1938. 70 years after its destruction by the National Socialists, Mainz again received a visible sign for a new, lively Judaism in 2010.
ST. CHRISTOPHER'S
It was virtually destroyed during the heavy bomb raids on Mainz in 1942 and 1945. In 1963/64, a chapel was built on its ruins. St. Christopher's features a late Gothic baptismal font believed to be the font in which Johannes Gutenberg was baptised. The contemporary relief between the concrete pillars is the work of Heinz Hemrich.
