SEWING, HOME, AND DESIGNS TO HELP YOU BEAUTIFY YOUR LIFE FLORA AND FAUNA SEWING As promised in my intro post about the Flora and Fauna fabric that’s now out in the world (yay!), today I’m bringing you some of the things I’ve sewn up for my kids and some fun ideas for usingeach print.
You’ll just have to be patient with the photos, since it was super cold outside during these photos, and my kids were cooperative, but freezing. And there was a skinned knee incident, so they were reallytroopers.
Let’s start with the deer! I made my youngest daughter a cute little t-shirt dress with colorful ties with the teal windowpane deer.
I love how simple it is and shows off the deer so well. I initially was going to pair it with teal solid, but loved this green with it so much I had to go with the deep sage color. It’s a perfect complement. I used the Sew Like My Mom Pistachio Teefor
the dress and just lengthened it 9″ and added ties at my daughter’s natural waist. Then there’s the coral windowpane deer.
It’s so stinkin’ feminine and cute. I made a Hey June CamdenRaglan with
the deer for the body and the coral dots coordinate for the sleeves and details. The Camden is my favorite raglan for my older daughters (it starts at a size 6 since its a teen pattern) and I use it all the time because of the feminine lines and details. She wanted a pencil skirt, and the rainbow herringboneis so,
so easy to whip up that I love making them as much as my daughterslove wearing them.
My little guy got some herringbone as well. Paired with the same solid sage, he also got a pistachio tee. I love the color blocking on this pattern, so I use it often. This combo was so fun I also made another one (almost the same) for mynephew.
Then my oldest daughter also wanted a pencil skirt from the herringbone (they love to coordinate with each other and often want the same thing although I like to switch it up a little for ease of laundry sorting…) so she got one from the other color way. And another Camden Raglan in the Teal stripes.
What I love about this one is how the stripes match at the raglan sleeve. I love stripes so much for this reason. There’s always a cool way to work with stripes. I paired it with a solid teal, but it works equally well with mustard or the other color stripes. And what about the rainbow stripes?
They’re here too, but in an unmodeled shot. Sometimes you do whatyou can do. Lol.
For this shirt, i wanted a fun diagonal that is the main focus of the whole top. It’s a slim-fitting dolman, and all of your attention goes right to where the stripes meet up. I was having quite the day I made this though, and had to recut the top several times to get them right–I just couldn’t wrap my head around what I was doing wrong. Gah! (Tell me I’m not the only one who has this kind of day.) So that’s a variety of projects you can make from these fabrics, and I have so many more in store including using the stripes across the chest of a tee, Easter pjs for the family, and a herringbone hoodie. Hopefully I can get those done soon and share them with you. I’ve been sharing a whole lot of ideas and other projects on Instagram , so I’d love to have you follow along over there as well. SEWING SUPPLIES THAT WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER THERE’S AN EASIER WAY TO DO THAT You’ve got all the basic sewing tools, and you can get through almost anything the pattern throws at you. You are awesome. But sometimes it’s just really nice to have a tool to speed up the process and make those sewing tasks just a bit less painful. For me, one of my least favorite sewing tasks is getting the spacing of my buttons/buttonholes perfect. I can’t tell you how many times in my early sewing where I was totally guessing at button placement or when I thought you just evenly spaced them from top to bottom and then was sad about a gap at the top. Eventually, I realized that I needed to leave an appropriate distance from the top and bottom, then divide the remaining space between my number of buttons. But we both know that math isn’t what I want to do during sewing (refer back to the circle skirt cheat sheet for that explanation). So getting something as simple in concept as a simflex gauge is a magical solution. All the sudden, I can place the gauge on my project with my desired number of buttons and—tadah!—perfectly spaced buttons with no calculations required. I’m a happy girl. So today I’ve put together a list of NON-ESSENTIAL TOOLS AND SUPPLIES THAT WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE SO MUCH EASIER, even though you can certainly do without if necessary.SERGER
SERGER —If you sew a lot of knit or want to, get a serger (also called an overlocker) ASAP. It changed my sewing life for sure. All my finished seams look so much more professional after getting a serger. And knits are a breeze. It opens up a whole new area of sewing and is SO fast. If you’re just starting out, a Brother model like this one (which I’ve been using for 7 years now and going strong) is a great choice. When mine finally gives out (which it doesn’t even seem close to doing), I’ll upgrade to something like this Babylock or Juki model since I know how much I’ve used and loved serging my clothes. _If I could only choose one thing on this list to get, a serger would be it._CONSTRUCTION TOOLS
FRENCH CURVE RULER —If you’re going to do some altering or pattern hacking, a French curve ruler will make getting clean curves and natural lines so much easier. Use it to rejoin lines on a pattern or to create new ones (i.e. if you want to add a curved hem to a shirt instead of the straight hem on the pattern, this will give you a nice smooth line instead of eyeballingit).
BASTING TAPE —If you’re adding trim to something, you can certainly pin it in place while you sew, but you’re still going to have some play in the trim. Instead, use basting tape to “stick” it in place while you sew. It’s also great for fiddly hems, placing zippers, or anywhere else you need to hold something while you sew. POINT TURNER —Get those corners super crisp with a point turner. It won’t poke through your project like a pencil and you can use the other end for great finger-pressed points. https://amzn.to/318Wrg3 TUBE TURNER —If you’re turning small tubes of fabric for straps, a tube turner is going to save you a LOT of time. And frustration. You can also use a straw and a stick to achieve the same thing, but definitely look into one of these. https://amzn.to/38O9LJp BODKIN —A bodkin is faster and easier than trying to use a safety pin to thread elastic or drawstrings through casings. It holds the end of the elastic securely, is easy to hold, and slides through easily. https://amzn.to/38QdyGd JEAN-A-MA-JIG —(also called a hump jumper). Anytime you’re going through thick fabric layers, this little tool will help you from getting stuck. Commonly used for constructing jeans, it’s also great for bags and other places where you’ve got several seams coming together that are thicker than the rest.SIMFLEX GAUGE
—I’ve
already talked about this awesome tool above, so I’ll just say that it’s great for buttons, but also for anywhere you need even spacing like pleats, tucks, gathers, and smocking. https://www.wawak.com/Cutting-Measuring/Tapes-Rulers/simflex-expanding-sewing-gauge/?sku=TA49 BUTTONHOLE CUTTER —Line up your finished buttonhole the cutter will easily and cleanly open them up without the risk of ripping beyond the edges of your buttonhole. Your buttonholes will look really sharp and professional. It also comes with a circularpunch for eyelets.
https://amzn.to/2O7MeLNPRESSING TOOLS
TAILOR’S HAM —Use this for pressing rounded seams like sleeve caps, darts, and curved hems. You’ll get your darts and edges pressed in a natural shape and without distortingthem.
https://amzn.to/2RD74ov POINT PRESSER AND POUNDING BLOCK (CLAPPER)—Use
the pointed top to get small, detail seams pressed flat like on collars, cuffs, and other tight areas. And the bottom part is awesome for getting thick seams super flat—press the seam with your iron, then hold the block over the seam to hold the heat in without scorching the fabric. https://www.wawak.com/Pressing-Spotting/Pressing-Accessories/point-presser-and-pounding-block/?sku=BO107 SLEEVE BOARD —Press long tubes of fabric like sleeves or pant legs in the round with a sleeve board. It helps you get everything pressed beautifully without creases. https://amzn.to/2GBenql GOOD QUALITY IRON –you probably already have an iron, but since we’re talking about things that make life easier, I’m going to just point out that a really good iron makes a big difference. I’ve used several brands over the years (including Rowenta and Shark), but my hands down favorite iron I’ve used is this one from CHI. If you want to read more about it, I did a reviewhere.

FLORA AND FAUNA MINI COLLECTION I designed a mini collection of fabric! I feel like shouting it from the rooftops, I’m so thrilled (and nervous). And I hope you’re as excited about them as I am. Today I’m giving you an overview of the fabrics, and in the days and weeks to come I’ll share projects I’ve been making with the fabric to give you ideas of what to make and the possibilities of the prints. There are three different prints in two colorways designed for boys and girls. The main colors are teal and coral with beautiful coordinating colors in aqua, green, and mustard (for the teal) and aqua, sage, and yellow (for the coral). Color palettes have always been an important part of creating for me, and I can’t tell you enough how much I love this palette. It just makes me happy. If you haven’t ordered from Raspberry Creek before, let me tell you a few reasons why I love them. * Their knit is beautiful and thick. Their cotton/spandex knit jersey and French terry are both great quality—their white is opaque and doesn’t need anything under it while maintaining great stretch and recovery. Almost all the CLUB prints are printed on this lovely base. * CLUB prints are exclusive to Raspberry Creek, and there’s always a great selection that rotates regularly. This spring line will be available until the fall, when it will retire to make room for newprints.
* The customer service is amazing. If there’s ever a problem, they are wonderful to work with and so eager to fix any issues. I’ve been ordering here for about 4-5 years, and it’s my go-to for knits.ABOUT THE PRINTS

Let me tell you that they went through a lot of changes throughout the creative process as I knew they had so much potential. The windowpane detail on the deer is so good in person. I LOVE them, and so do my kids. I love the juxtaposition of the geometric windowpane with the more organic clumping of the deer—like you’d just caught a herd grazing. And while I’ve already started making things for my kids out of the deer, I’m also dreaming of a pair of lounge pants formyself.
TEAL AND SAGE WINDOWPANE DEER, FLORA AND FAUNA BY LISA MABEY CLUBFABRICS
CORAL AND SAGE WINDOWPANE DEER, FLORA AND FAUNA BY LISA MABEY CLUBFABRICS
A great stripe is essential, and I gravitate to them in almost every collection. I love the double stripe in a single color before moving on to the next because it gives your eye a wider visual band of color and is a little bit surprising. And this is where the strong color palette comes into play. I could use swaths of this fabric all over because I love the palette so much. And then there’s a colorful hand drawn herringbone that uses the same color palette and provides a fun texture. It’s a loose, playful herringbone that nods to the geometric sensibilities of the other two prints, but also works really nicely on its own. It’s a great all-over print that’s not too loud but is still really fun. MY FIRST FORAY INTO FABRIC DESIGN Do you ever get a chance that just feels right and you jump after it not knowing what might come from it? I’m cautious by nature, and I don’t always go after things on my own. In fact, I’m really good at saying, “I’ll do some research and find about a little bit more about it before I start.” And then I never do because I get scared. But sometime last spring I had the opportunity to be part of the first Project Run & Play fabric collaboration. If you’re not familiar, Project Run & Play started as a sewing competition and throughout the past year or so they’ve added patterns, digital designs, and a round of fabric all designed by former PR&P designers to their site. So I joined up with 4 other ladies, and together we collaborated on a group of fabrics under the Project Adventure name. Today I’m sharing the two designs I created and the sample clothing I made from theprints.
It was so fun to take a step into the world of fabric design, and it reminded me how much I love designing things. It’s been several years since I really have done any designing and I was so excited theday my fabric came.
CAMPSITE
When I think of adventure, I think of camping. There are pine trees, a tent, a fire (with s’mores of course), and a lot of nostalgia thrown in. So when we chose the adventure theme, I knew I wanted to include these elements. I also knew I wanted to use watercolor as my medium. I painted each of the elements separately and then arranged them into a scene that felt somewhat like finding and setting up a campsite—placing each bit until it was complete. Buy Campsite Print Here Once I had my motif complete, I played around with how to arrange them. I love the ease of a tossed print, but have always been drawn to geometric prints as well. Using the strong base of the motif, I was happy to realize that they’d make a great secondary design (triangles) when viewed further away, with the great details upclose.
The small design of this motif is great for kids clothes and smaller pieces since the repeat is small. It also incorporates a range of colors because of the watercolor, so finding a coordinate is a breeze.TREE LINE
When you’re camping, hiking is almost a given. Working your way up a trail into a clearing, you almost always find a tree line at the edge of the meadow with a variety of trees, bushes, and grasses. It just seemed like a watercolor tree line had to be my second design.Buy Treeline Here
I wanted the trees to be big and bold—almost like a patterned rugby stripe. It has a larger repeat, but can be used in small sections too. Because of the scale and also the more subdued color palette, this print is great for simple, minimalist pieces that really show off the fabric rather than the cut lines. Use this print as a stripe, as an accent piece on a colorblocked garment, or cut out your favorite clump of trees for a fun applique or pocket. Use the tree line print as a tuxedo stripe for a pair of joggers. And it pairs beautifully with many colors since green is anatural neutral.
WHERE CAN I BUY SOME? These prints were printed and sold at Project Run & Play, and there are just a few yards left of each print. So hurry over (via the link right below this paragraph) if you’d like some of the last of it!Campsite Print
Treeline Print
WILL THERE BE MORE DESIGNS? Yes! I can’t say where or when yet, but there will definitely be more fabric designs coming from me. I got the designing bug, and have been working on some things coming up soon. And it feels so good to be creating something as tangible and fun to use as fabric. So staytuned!

SHOULD I BUY THAT NEW PATTERN? TIPS FOR BUILDING A SOLID PATTERN LIBRARY AND SAVING YOURSELF MONEY INTHE PROCESS.
There it is–the newest pattern in the sewing world. You’re seeing lots of tester photos, darling models, and dreaming of making one for yourself–when you get to it. But before you rush over and buy it, can I propose you think about whether you really need it? When I started sewing, I was enthralled by the idea that you could test patterns or write blog reviews and get them for FREE. Free is a motivating word in my world. (Of course there’s always a cost–the fabric you’ll use that may or may not work out depending on how final the pattern really is, your time in sewing and looking over the instructions and pattern pieces themselves, and the deadlines. But I did it for the patterns.) And then I’d see a big “sale” and buy several patterns at a time only to realize I’d acquired more patterns than I had time to sew because I had other obligations. WHY MAKE A PATTERN LIBRARY? Over time, I began to realize that I was essentially making up the same thing over and over with different details. And some fit me/my kids better than others. I was also running out of space to put all the printed patterns I’d made once and never looked at again. I’m frugal by nature. I don’t like spending money on things that take up space and clutter up my life, especially when I might already have something I can make work. So, I did some clearing/organizing. That’s another thing I really like to do. And I started by going through all the things I’d probably never make again and the things I would probably never make at all. That one hurt. Then I started looking for patterns–like clues to what I really liked and didn’t. What designers was I getting rid of? What types of patterns was I not making? What designers really fit me/my kids best? Do I really need 4 t-shirt patterns? It was eye opening. I realized I would rather have one fabulous-fitting t-shirt pattern that I altered in many ways than many patterns that all fit differently. One dress bodice that I had perfected was easy to change up with different skirts, sleeves, andnecklines.
I went through my patterns and was ruthless. If it’s not the pattern I reach for, out it goes. And honestly, I haven’t missed any of the ones that are gone. I have exactly what I need for me and my kids. PUTTING A PATTERN THROUGH THE TEST Do I occasionally buy a new pattern? Yes. I’m not totally immune, but I do try to put it through a test with some of the followingquestions:
* Do I already own something similar that I can make work fairlyeasily?
* Does this designer’s patterns typically work for my body type? * Do I have a specific purpose for this pattern (i.e. am I going to sew it up for sure, or is it just fun for “later.”) * Does it fill a hole in my wardrobe? If I can’t honestly answer “yes” to most of these questions (or “no” to the first one), I leave it. I don’t really need it. WHAT’S IN YOUR LIBRARY? So what is in my pattern library? A lot of great basics and some specific pieces that fill in the gaps. They mostly fit my daily routine, and they’re pretty heavy on a specific designer group. Below I’ll list the basic category the patterns fit into. But remember to find what works for you. KNIT PATTERN RECOMMENDATIONS* Basic tee
* Dolman
* Raglan
* Knit dress (preferably with gathered and circle skirt options) * Hoodie/Jacket (preferably with full zip and no-zip options) * Fitted Dress with shaping seams* Sweater/Cardigan
* Joggers
* Leggings
* Fit and Flare/Swing/Skater dress* Swimsuit
WOVEN PATTERN RECOMMENDATIONS * Basic Dress with sleeveless/sleeves* Woven tee/blouse
* Wrap Dress/Top
* Tunic
* Button-Down
* Jeans
* A-line Skirt
* Pencil skirt
* Blazer or Jacket
BENEFITS TO A PATTERN LIBRARY Once you’ve sewn for awhile you start to see how you can achieve almost any look by modifying the basic pieces you already have. Sure, there are some instances where I will buy a new pattern for the ease of the project, but there are rarely times when I CAN’T do it with the basic patterns I already own. And there are other benefits to using the same tried and true patterns for your projects beyond saving money. They include: * You already know what alterations to make to the basic shape and you already know how it fits YOU. * You’ve made it before so there’s less to print, tape, and prep. * You’ve made it before so it’s FASTER. That’s a big one forme.
* Lengthen a sleeve, add a ruffle, raise a neckline–you’ve got a new look without spending any more money. What do you think? Do you prefer to have all the new patterns or does this idea interest you? How would you make a pattern library work foryou?
