After discussion, each local League recommends positions to be retained, reviewed, updated, and/or deleted as well as those that the LWVC should emphasize for the following two years. RACIAL JUSTICE ACT COMMUNITY IMPLEMENTATION The Caifornia Racial Justice Act is landmark legislation that prohibits the state from seeking or obtaining a criminal conviction, or from imposing a sentence, based on race, ethnicity or national origin. This bill was initially set aside due to the effects of COVID, but was revived through intensive advocacy in the closing days of the Legislative session and signed into law by the Governor. POSITION ON VOTING RIGHTS The 1976 Convention’s adoption of Voting Rights as an integral part of the national Program and the 1978 confirmation of that decision underlined the already existing authority under the Principles for the League to act on this basic right. In May 1982, the LWVUS Board made explicit the League’s position on Voting Rights, and the 1982REDISTRICTING

With the launch of the LWVUS partnership with PROP 21: LOCAL GOVERNMENTS AND RENT CONTROL Housing costs in California tend to be higher than other states. Several California cities have “rent control” laws that limit how much landlords can increase rents each year. State law prevents rent control on single-family homes and housing built after Feb. 1, 1995. Landlords can charge any amount they want when a new renter moves in. Landlords must also be allowed to increase rents on HOW TO CHOOSE A POLITICAL PARTY WHEN REGISTERING TO VOTE Choose a political party that has the same general views you do. For example, some political parties think that government should do more for people. Others feel that government should make it easier for people to do things for themselves. If you do not want to join a political party, mark that box on your voter registration form.
