The promising truth: 250 pastors leave the ministry every month. In September 2015, the results of a Lifeway Research survey of 1,500 pastors of evangelical and historically black churches found only 1% of pastors abandon the pulpit each year. I can think of at least three implications from this groundbreaking research. EIGHT WARNING SIGNS FOR FORCED TERMINATIONS OF PASTORS A few years ago, Christianity Today summarized some fascinating information about forced pastor terminations.Using the combined research of the National Congregations Study and the Review of Religious Research, the magazine noted eight warning signs or predictors for forced terminations. HOW MANY US CHURCHES ARE ACTUALLY GROWING? Another 33 percent say their church has remained within 5 percent, while 39 percent say their congregation has grown by at least 6 percent since the first quarter of 2016. More than half of 18- to 44-year old pastors (55 percent) say their church is growing, 8 TIPS FOR HANDLING THE TALKER IN YOUR SMALL GROUP 8. Don’t hang a label on the Talker. During times of frustration, you may be tempted to think ill of the talker in your group. Don’t. Resist the temptation to hang a label around his or her neck. Their over-talkative nature might occasionally make your blood boil, but think don’t allow that to CHURCH MEMBERSHIP IS FALLING, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE SKY Religious membership was stable throughout the 20th century but fell from 70% in 2000 to 47% in 2020. While this should cause concern among church leaders, the situation may be less dire than it appears. SOUTHERN BAPTISTS FACE LARGEST MEMBERSHIP DECLINE IN 100 Total membership in the Southern Baptist Convention fell almost 2% to 14,525,579 from 2018 to 2019, according to the Annual Church Profile compiled by Lifeway Christian Resources in cooperation with Baptist state conventions. The decline of 287,655 members is the largest single year drop in more than 100 years.
