DOWNTOWN 2021 takes its name from the film Downtown 81, which portrayed a day in the New York City of 1981 in all its glory. Forty years later, the exhibition acts as a sequel to the film, taking inspiration from downtown as an idea, a state of mind, and a generative space—rather than just a geographic location—and extending its scope beyond Manhattan to galleries in Brooklyn andQueens.

She founded La MaMa with the belief that space is vital to the creative process for artists and audiences alike. NICK PAYNE’S CONSTELLATIONS Performed in Mandarin Chinese with supertitles in English. Nick Payne’s play CONSTELLATIONS has been well-received on Broadway with Jake Gyllenhaal and in the West End with Sally Hawkins, but the award-winning Chinese production has its own special charm. This edition of Cafe La MaMa Live will be the second in an ongoing process of choreographers exploring the creation/recreation of work for an online platform. DOWNTOWN 2021 takes its name from the film Downtown 81, which portrayed a day in the New York City of 1981 in all its glory. Forty years later, the exhibition acts as a sequel to the film, taking inspiration from downtown as an idea, a state of mind, and a generative space—rather than just a geographic location—and extending its scope beyond Manhattan to galleries in Brooklyn andQueens.

It’s All True is an opera-in-suspension based on the complete live archives of iconic underground band Fugazi. An obsessive leap into 1500 hours of gig detritus made from only incidental text and sounds, none of Fugazi’s actual songs. An ear-body-and-mind-flossing: overloaded, maddening, properly funny, and a radical incitement toaction.

American playwright, actor, author, and director, Sam Shepard, who died on July 27, 2017, was a prominent playwright whose work spanned decades.Sam did much of his early work at La MaMa and was one of the playwrights championed by La MaMa founder, the late Ellen Stewart.His original scripts, playbills, production photos and posters are part of the La MaMa Archives. SERIES OF ONE: PRELUDE TO THE APOCALYPSE (FOR WHAT IT’S Prelude to the Apocalypse (For What It’s Worth) is an investigative piece which engages with the climate crises in a number of unexpected ways: through the lens of evolutionary time, the biblical apocalypse, and the process of growing up as a person and a society.
