MEET DR. RAKESH CHAUDHARY MAY 30, 2021 - Dr. Rakesh Chaudhary was named physician in chief at Kaiser Medical Center in Santa Clara just days before the world imploded with COVID-19. “It seems so long ago, but also like yesterday,” says Dr. Chaudhary. “Several of us were talking about a virus that was coming our way and literally two days later our first case landed at the hospital here. Suddenly we were standing on the epicenter.” Santa Clara County had the first recorded US death from COVID. “I was worried about our community, our staff, our physicians, and I could see the fear in their eyes and I could hear the fear in their voices. And they just kept doing their work,” saysDr. Chaudhary.

The quarter also marked the first notable rise in asking rents for industrial, lab, and R&D space. Vacancy rates for office and R&D space rose as well. In contrast, industrial space vacancy rates remainedrelatively stable.

THE 2021 SILICON VALLEY INDEX: TALE OF TWO VALLEYS Joint Venture CEO Russell Hancock summarized the major findings from the 2021 Silicon Valley Index at the annual State of the Valley conference held online February 23-24. The report showed the region in a state of bifurcation with the tech sector mounting record numbers while the in-person economy shuttered. "We are not one but two Valleys," Hancock explained, with charts showing the nation's most pronounced income inequality and troubling racial disparities, even while Silicon Valley's driving industries filled a crucial (and highly profitable) role in the global pandemic. Joint Venture’s 2021 State of the Valley conference was held entirely online this year over two consecutive days, February 23 and 24.
