CENTRAL SENSITIZATION Central sensitization is a condition of the nervous system that is associated with the development and maintenance of chronic pain. When central sensitization occurs, the nervous system goes through a process called wind-up and gets regulated in a persistent state of high reactivity. This persistent, or regulated, state of reactivity lowers the threshold for what causes pain and subsequently INEFFECTIVE TREATMENT In the popular press, the oft-cited example in this regard is antibiotics for simple earache. 1 Most people assume that antibiotics are effective for the treatment of earache. Anyone with children has brought them to a clinic for an earache and has come out with a prescription for an antibiotic. POST-HERPETIC-NEURALGIA Post-herpetic neuralgia, but not necessarily shingles, is associated with older age. That is to say, people can tend to develop shingles at various ages but patients are more likely to develop the complication of post-herpetic neuralgia if elderly. WHAT IS CHRONIC PAIN|TYPES OF PAIN Chronic pain has two characteristics that are different than acute pain. First, chronic pain lasts longer than six months. Second, and most importantly, chronic pain is pain that occurs in addition to the pain of the original health condition. A vicious cycle is the cycle of pain causing pain: chronic pain that causes secondary complications, which subsequently make the originalchronic pain worse.

Depression. Trauma. Opioid pain medication dependence. Being unemployed. Financial stressors due to being out of work or unpaid medical bills. Insomnia. Fatigue. Poor concentration and short-term memory. Stress-related health problems, such as headaches, reflux & indigestion, diarrhea, increased blood pressure. What is conversion disorder? A conversion disorder is a nerve-related condition that is due to psychological stress or trauma. While not fully understood, the symptoms develop in response to stress or trauma that lead to intolerable conflict. COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY FOR PAIN Cognitive behavioral therapy is a traditional form of therapy that is used for a great many types of health conditions. Historically beginning in the 1970’s, it was first used as treatments for chronic pain and depression, 1, 2 but later applied to all forms of anxiety disorders and other mental health disorders, as well as other health disorders, such as diabetes 3 and heart disease. 4PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME

HOW TO END THE STIGMA OF PAIN The end product of stigma is that patients feel hurt, ashamed, and angry. It puts them on the defensive and it can break trust. Moreover, patients with chronic pain can subsequently come to feel misunderstood, isolated and lonely. It’s therefore a significant problem. SLEEP DISTURBANCE
What is a sleep disturbance? Patients with chronic pain frequently experience sleep disturbances. Sleep disturbance is a catchall phrase for any type of problem in sleeping. The most common forms of sleep disturbances in patients with chronic pain are the following: Insomnia Hypersomnia Sleep apnea REDUCING PAIN BEHAVIORS: COPING WITH PAIN SERIES Reducing pain behaviors is a long-standing recommendation in chronic pain rehabilitation because it a way to learn to cope better withpain.
