An ancient legend tells the story that before the arrival of the god Quetzalcoatl, the Aztecs only consumed roots and game animals; they did not eat corn because it was beyond their reach, hidden behind the massive mountains surrounding the city. The other gods had already sought to part the mountains for the Aztecs to gain access to this precious food, but they never succeeded. It was declared the National Anthem on February 9,1854, after a national contest was launched to find an anthem for our country. It was first performed on September 15, 1854, for the Fiestas Patrias, or Independence Fiesta. CIELITO LINDO LYRICS Cielito Lindo is a traditional Mexican song written by Quirino Mendoza y Cortes in 1882. It is one of the most popular songs widely known throughout the Spanish-speaking world as a symbol of Mexico.
