The Indiana Historical Society and the Indiana Historical Bureau established the County Historian Program in 1981 in an effort to improve the historical communication network in the state. EARLY BLACK SETTLEMENTS Settlements Popular understanding of Indiana black history focuses on post-Civil War African-American migration to cities in the north, such as Evansville, Fort Wayne, Gary, Indianapolis and South Bend. This generalized thinking situates Indiana’s African-Americans as part of a national story, but fails to reveal the stories of free blacks and formerly enslaved people who settled HISTORIC BUSINESS REGISTER The Indiana Historical Society created the Historic Business Register in 1992 to give special recognition to Indiana companies that have operated continuously for a century or more to encourage the preservation of historically significant business-related archival materials, and to develop an increased awareness of Indiana’s rich business and industrial heritage. Hoosiers have long history or statewide and national accomplishments in a variety of areas and disciplines. Here’s a list of the notable people with a connection to the Hoosier State.
