AN UPDATED NOTE TO OUR GUESTS,STUDENTS AND FANS
Hello all,
When we last left you in December the world and our theater was pretty bleak. Although there was hope as the world slowly started to turn around, vaccines started flowing and, a revival of our arts community seemed only months away. Welcome to months away! We have some exciting news to share – Here’s the Short Version:* We’re BACK
* Classes (Online) are back!* Staff is back!
* We’re starting to explore what’s next! Read on for full details: For nearly 40 years, ImprovBoston has delighted audiences, provided classes and performance space for folks of all ages. For the last 15 years, we’ve enjoyed being part of Central Square, expanding our class space, occupying three buildings and being an epicenter of comedy in New England. While we do not have the physical space prepped and ready to enjoy live shows and live clases, we’re coming back in a few different ways..Classes
are coming back! In March of 2020 we were set to open our normal session of in-person, core curriculum, classes. We had hundreds of students lined up, teachers ready to teach, and the space ready to go. And then the world shut down. Those students have been waiting patiently for us to provide them with their classes, and we’re doingthem now!
The online classes we’re offering are exciting and fun, and take key components from our core curriculum and move them into a new format. If you’d like to sign up – please do so! As a thank you for being a patient supporter of ImprovBoston, here’s a discount code to bring the price down to $125: IBComeback2021 (Valid until Classes on April26th)
Register for our New Spring (Virtual) Classes Here Over the last few months we secured a few large grants in the last few months which allowed the staff to come back to work on a part time basis, and also helped us get our National Touring Company working on a few projects. First, a grant directly from Cambridge Community Foundation (CCF) has helped us reopen our classes, which has kept our Comedy School Director Corey O’Rourke busy. We also received another wonderful grant from a local Cambridge company (through CCF,) to start TourCo working on a beautiful project making sure Cambridge Area Seniors can experience the joy and connection of Improv. The team is working to make this happen, with Kelly MacFarland starting the process of shaking the sleep off ofTourCo.
Finally. We just closed out on another Federal Payroll Protection Program Loan (PPPL), which will grant the admin team (Kelly, Corey, Matt, and Josh) the ability to work full time again for the next five months. At the same time we are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to apply for the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) from the SBA. If we receive that it will give us the funding to remain working, paying rent for a full year, and will give us the chance to get teachers and performers back and working! So for now, the ImprovBoston organization is intact, with a smaller presence in Central Square, and the administrative team will be back online to get the theater ready for a big comeback. We have a world class model improv theater, classes, an incredible amount of expertise through our vibrant community, and now we’re ready to take on 2021 to get back on stage, get back in classes and get ImprovBoston to a much better place! BLACK LIVES MATTER.
The horrific murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Amaud Arbery, and countless other people of color are completely appalling, and ImprovBoston proudly adds our voice to the fight for equality andjustice.
ImprovBoston believes that diverse voices are a necessity for the arts, and we have strived to be a place for all voices to be heard. We’ve fallen short. We haven’t fought hard enough to provide a space for marginalized voices to speak on our stages, and we have been passive in our efforts to truly live up to our statements about diversity, equity, and inclusion and that has to stop. We have to do better. We will do better. Going forward, ImprovBoston fully commits to: – Educate our administrative staff, instructors, and performers with anti-racist and implicit bias training – Create opportunities for students, performers, directors, and instructors from underrepresented and marginalized communities by active recruitment and training at the expense of the theater – Hire an outside Diversity & Inclusion Coordinator – Decolonize our curriculum and classroom processes – Decentralize our casting and show selection procedure While the immediate physical and financial future of our theater is uncertain, these are steps we believe must be a part of the future ofImprovBoston.
We will be the theater our community, and our world, needs us to be. Please consider donating to Black Lives Matter, bail out programs for protestors, or to theaters/organizations that amplify the voices ofBIPOC:

HELP US KEEP IMPROVBOSTON’S MISSION GOINGA RICH HISTORY
For the past 38 years, ImprovBoston has been fortunate to be operationally funded. Our weekly shows cover the cost of our theater, comedy school operations, and sustain our mission-driven work. On June 26th, that changed: We made the difficult decision to suspend operations to ensure our staff, performers, and patrons remain safe during the pandemic. OUR COMMITMENT TO PEOPLE While our first priority is and will always be the safety of our community, our second is supporting those who help make ImprovBoston what it is: our performers, instructors, and staff. This means providing economic security during the shut down, and both a stage and a job to return to when it is safe. HELP US WEATHER THIS STORM It pains us to say a long-term loss of revenue could mean we neverreopen.
This is why we are asking for the support of donors both individual and corporate: so that when it is safe, we can quickly return to entertaining the Boston area, and resume our mission-driven work. HOW DONATIONS WILL BE USED With the loss of our space at 40 Prospect Street, once the pandemic is over and there is opportunity to perform again, we will be looking to start again in a new space. All donations to the organization will help ease that process and hopefully, you’ll be right at the beginning of a new life for ImprovBoston.Donate Now
