WORK / READINGS
After extensive work overhauling the back end of the Readings website to integrate with a third-party warehousing and fulfilment system, we set our focus on improving the public face of the site. WORK / SONGLINES: TRACKING THE SEVEN SISTERS Songlines is an exhibition at the National Museum of Australia centred around the Seven Sisters Dreaming. It tells creation stories of the Martu, the Ngaanyatjarra and the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara peoples, through art, sculpture, video, and digital experiences. WORK / THE WHEELER CENTRE Icelab was brought on design and build a new platform to help them realise those aspirations. This process began with a series of workshops with staff and stakeholders from the Wheeler Centre to try and discover what they wanted to achieve, to understand resourcing issues that might impede those aims, workflow issues with their existing platform, and to tease out latent ideas from their teams. WORK / UNITED STATES STUDIES CENTRE The United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney is a place for research, teaching and public engagement. The website presents this in a clear and engaging way through its four major content streams: Study, Research, Experts and Events. ICELAB, AN AUSTRALIAN DESIGN STUDIO It’s time for something new. After 14 years we’re hanging up our keyboards. Our team is joining the lovely people at Culture Amp, where we’ll be helping build a better world of work. After extensive work overhauling the back end of the Readings website to integrate with a third-party warehousing and fulfilment system, we set our focus on improving the public face of the site. WORK / CORLEY COLLECTION EXPLORER The Corley Explorer allows visitors to explore, tag and append their own personal stories and images to the more than 60,000 photographs taken by Frank and Eunice Corley of Queensland homes in the 1960s and 1970s.. Icelab was approached by Mitchell Whitelaw and Geoff Hinchcliffe from the Data Design Lab at the ANU School of Art and Design to construct an API for the collection. WORK / THE THOUSANDS We joined forces with Anthony Kolber, John McLennan and the team from Right Angle Studio to redesign and rebuild The Thousands. An online magazine covering the ’000 postcodes around Australia — Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney — The Thousands has been publishing since 2005 and has, er, thousands of loyal readers acrossthe country.
NOTES / CORLEY EXHIBITION WEBSITE AND EXPLORER TOOL Icelab worked with the State Library of Queensland and ANU School of Art and Design to help design and build two online pieces for the Home: a suburban obsession exhibition.. Home explores the photography of Frank and Eunice Corley, an entrepreneurial couple who drove the streets of Queensland in their pink Cadillac from the 1960s to the 1970s, photographing suburban homes. NOTES — ICELAB, AN AUSTRALIAN DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT STUDIO An all-in-one directive-controller with AngularJS. This week the kind folks at Good Films hosted the second ngMelb at their offices in Fitzroy and I gave a demo of a technique for wrapping up some complex behaviour into a simple directive. NOTES BY MICHAEL HONEY Alpine style. When Reinhold Messner climbed Everest, he did it ‘alpine style’, with minimal equipment and support, as opposed to the hitherto prevailing 'expedition style’, which sacrificed speed, agility, and beauty in favour of extensive preparation, exhaustive planning, masses of equipment and people to carry it.NOTES TAGGED RUBY

NOTES / TIM TALKS “VIEWS, FROM THE TOP” I had the honour of speaking last month at RubyConf AU 2019, where I got to share a topic I’m especially excited about: building better views!. For those who’d like to follow along at home, this post includes the video, the slides, and a full transcript of the talk! NOTES BY MICHAEL HONEY When Reinhold Messner climbed Everest, he did it ‘alpine style’, with minimal equipment and support, as opposed to the hitherto prevailing 'expedition style’, which sacrificed speed, agility, and beauty in favour of extensive preparation, exhaustive planning, masses of equipment and people to carry it.
