WHY DO CHILDREN END UP IN ORPHANAGES 80% of children in orphanages have a living parent, but are abandoned because of poverty, disabilities or discrimination. There are four sets of reasons why children end up in orphanages. REASON 1: POVERTY, DISABILITIES, DISCRIMINATION. Some families struggle to cope, whether it is in finding work, feeding their children or paying for schoolfees.
WHAT IS INSTITUTIONAL CARE? 15 CHARACTERISTICS OF Institutional care is a type of residential care for large groups of children characterised by a one-size-fits-all approach. Children living in institutions, also known as orphanages, are provided with the same services, irrespective of their age, gender, abilities, needs and reasons for separation from parents. BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA The story of Hope and Homes for Children started in 1994 when a retired British UN Commander, Mark Cook, and his wife Caroline visited the Bjelave Children’s Institution in Sarajevo, Bosnia. There are currently around 2,000 children in orphanages throughout the country, half of whom are in specialised institutions for children withdisabilities.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH ORPHANAGE TOURISM AND VOLUNTOURISM? What is wrong with Orphanage VolunTourism? Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’, is an emerging trend of travel linked to “doing good”. It has been estimated that every year 1.6 million people volunteer overseas with voluntourism being considered the fastest growing ‘trend’ in travel, a trend worth an estimated $2.6 billionper year.
