Open Call: Seattle’s Full Story. Seattle’s Full Story is a recurring blog series intended to help address a lack of diversity and representation in traditional historic preservation storytelling with compensated features from BIPOC Contributors. EMERGENCY RENT RELIEF FUND In response to the pandemic, and thanks to a generous matching gift from the Raynier Foundation, Historic Seattle launched its Emergency Rent Relief Fund in October 2020. So far, more than $161,000 has been contributed to the fund. Relief is being distributed in TIME TO SAVE THE HAHN BUILDING, NOW Its historic timeline goes back to the early 1880s arrival of Robert Hahn. In 1889, at the time of the Great Seattle Fire that devastated most of Pioneer Square, Hahn operated a wood-frame saloon and beer garden on this site. After the fire, it was said to be the last placestanding for a

About the Admiral’s House: Situated on a bluff overlooking Elliott Bay and downtown Seattle, the Admiral’s House represents the significant role Seattle played in World War II naval history. Between 1944 and 2006, the residence GOOD SHEPHERD CENTER -HISTORIC SEATTLE Historic Seattle’s Role: After providing over 60 years of service to young women seeking shelter, education, and training, declining numbers of residents forced the Home of the Good Shepherd to close in 1973. After the Wallingford community defeated a proposal to turn the 11-acre site into a shopping center, the City of Seattle bought the DEATH OF A LANDMARK: THE SULLIVAN HOUSE Advocacy. It took only a couple hours (if even that) to demolish the 122 year-old Sullivan House on Capitol Hill the morning of March 18. This historic home, prominently situated on the southeast corner of 15th Avenue and E. Olive Way, was a designated Seattle Landmark. An example of the Prairie School work of Seattle architects Willatsen and Byrne (as adapted to hilly Seattle), the Matzen House has been carefully restored by its owners and is currently being considered for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1983, Historic Seattle acquired the building and provided financing assistance for the rehabilitation of what was a very deteriorated building located HISTORIC SEATTLE STAFFHISTORIC SEATTLE David McClain | Asset & Property Manager. Type of Preservationist: Classic. Favorite Place in Seattle: Ballard. Over the course of many years it has undergone a transformation from sleepy neighborhood to bustling commercial and artistic hub, and the revitalization of the historic district along Ballard Avenue has been a major contributingfactor.
CADILLAC HOTEL -HISTORIC SEATTLE Historic Seattle’s Role: The Cadillac Hotel was badly damaged by the February 28, 2001 Nisqually earthquake, and at risk for demolition due to high rehabilitation costs. In September 2001, Historic Seattle stepped forward with an alternate engineering plan that would preserve the building, and lay the foundation for a long term preservation project. The Comp Plan will serve as our roadmap to achieving the future vision we want over the next 20 years, while preserving and improving our neighborhoods.THE CHAPEL SPACE
Built in 1906, the Good Shepherd Center offers an intimate performance and rehearsal space within the restored 4th floor former chapel. Accessible by elevator, this beautiful two-story space features original stained glass, wood floors, columns, and recessed panel woodworking. Between 1944 and 2006, the residence GOOD SHEPHERD CENTER -HISTORIC SEATTLE Historic Seattle’s Role: After providing over 60 years of service to young women seeking shelter, education, and training, declining numbers of residents forced the Home of the Good Shepherd to close in 1973. After the Wallingford community defeated a proposal to turn the 11-acre site into a shopping center, the City of Seattle bought the WASHINGTON HALL -HISTORIC SEATTLE Historic Seattle’s Role: About Washington Hall Built in 1908 by the Danish Brotherhood, Washington Hall has continuously served as a hub for social and cultural activities reflecting a broad array of ethnic communities. This is a building that many have called a home. The story of Washington Hall is a mirror of the changes in PRESERVATION PROFESSIONALS DIRECTORY SEATTLE 2035 COMPREHENSIVE PLAN The City of Seattle recently released their Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the city’s Comprehensive Plan (Comp Plan) update, known as Seattle 2035. The Comp Plan will serve as our roadmap to achieving the future vision we want over the next 20 years, while preserving and improving our neighborhoods.THE CHAPEL SPACE
Built in 1906, the Good Shepherd Center offers an intimate performance and rehearsal space within the restored 4th floor former chapel. Accessible by elevator, this beautiful two-story space features original stained glass, wood floors, columns, and recessed panel woodworking. Historic Seattle’s Role: Originally built in 1890 in the Romanesque Revival style popular in Seattle after the 1889 fire, the Mutual Life Insurance Company purchased the building in 1916 and added five floors. In 1983, Historic Seattle acquired the building and provided financing assistance for the rehabilitation of what was a very deteriorated building located TOUR OF THE GEORGE MATZEN HOUSE Take a trip to the “prairies” of Queen Anne with this rare opportunity to visit the 1910 George Matzen House. An example of the Prairie School work of Seattle architects Willatsen and Byrne (as adapted to hilly Seattle), the Matzen House has been carefully restored by its owners and is currently being considered for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. EMERGENCY RENT RELIEF FUND In response to the pandemic, and thanks to a generous matching gift from the Raynier Foundation, Historic Seattle launched its Emergency Rent Relief Fund in October 2020. Whether formally designated/listed in a historic register or not, we value places that are significant in their communities. Historic Seattle offers technical assistance to individuals and neighborhood groups seeking to learn more about nominating properties. TIME TO SAVE THE HAHN BUILDING, NOW Its historic timeline goes back to the early 1880s arrival of Robert Hahn. In 1889, at the time of the Great Seattle Fire that devastated most of Pioneer Square, Hahn operated a wood-frame saloon and beer garden on this site. In 1983, Historic Seattle acquired the building and provided financing assistance for the rehabilitation of what was a very deteriorated building located EGAN HOUSE -HISTORIC SEATTLE Historic Seattle’s Role: Remarkable for its unusual, non-conforming modernist design, the Egan House, designed by architect Robert Reichert in 1958, was acquired by Historic Seattle in 1998 in partnership with the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department. Threatened with demolition on a number of occasions, the Egan House is an outstanding example of modern residential architecture. INCENTIVES FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION Historic Seattle is an active advocate for the expansion of financial and honorific incentive programs that support the continued preservation of Seattle’s historic places. Economic assistance is often necessary for places to be restored or adaptively reused, and we offer technical assistance to those interested in the incentives available to the Seattle region.
