DISC PLAYERS
The humble Compact Disc player, once a vestigial box with no inputs and a single pairof analogue outputs is increasingly becoming a preamp with a DAC and optical disc transport built in. Gone are the days when it was seen as an end in itself, now it is to all intents and purposes a digital music centre.REGA AETHOS
We first glimpsed a prototype of Rega’s Aethos integrated amplifier at The Bristol Hi-Fi Show back in February 2019. The sizeable gap between the £1,680 Elicit-R (HFC 374) and range-topping £6,400 Osiris (HFC 329) integrateds always suggested that another design might be in the works, and the Aethos is an intriguing combination of established Rega engineering with some new twists.REGA ANIA PRO
The Ania Pro cartridge is designed to bridge the gap between Rega’s £500 Ania (HFC 452) and the recently introduced Apheta 3 priced at £1,250. The MC offering costs £750 and can be preinstalled to either the Planar 6 (HFC 453) or Planar 8 (HFC 443) turntables, bringing their package prices up to £1,700 or £2,350 respectively.PARADIGM PERSONA B
Based near Toronto in Canada, Paradigm has built a strong reputation for loudspeaker design since 1982, but possibly mostly for home cinema use. Indeed, the Persona B (the B is for bookshelf) is marketed alongside matching floorstanders, a centre speaker and sub, but this two-way standmount deserves to be turning hi-fi heads too.NAIM SUPERNAIT 3
It’s just over 13 years since Naim first released the original Supernait. At the time, it represented a fairly radical departure for the Salisbury-based company, which, prior to then, seemed to view integrated amplifiers as an entry-level tier to its product range. French loudspeaker maker Focal pours a lot of time and money into R&D – probably more than most of its competitors. Originally known as Focal-JMLab, the company was founded in 1979 in Saint-Étienne by the engineer and hi-fi journalist Jacques Mahul and, from the very beginning, a restless desire to stay ahead of the curve fuelledinnovation.

To many people, a £600 standmount speaker is likely to conjure up a few assumptions. For example, it will have two drivers, be around 30 to 35cm tall and there will be a port somewhere in the cabinet to aid its bass response. In presuming this, you will have a handle on almost every model available at the price. The ‘almost’ is important, though, because Wharfedale has different ideas HEGEL H120 | HI-FI CHOICE It strikes me that the one integrated amplifier Hegel chose to christen with a noun rather than a number was developed as a messenger; a product tasked with articulating the company’s take on performance and functionality, but shrewdly priced for broad consumerconsideration.
