HAWK WEEKEND FESTIVAL 2021 : HAWK RIDGE BIRD OBSERVATORY Hawk Weekend is the annual festival held by the Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory in Duluth, MN. It is a wonderful opportunity to showcase one of North America’s best places to experience the fall bird migration at Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve. It was a toasty but bird-filled to be at the West Skyline Hawk Count! An exciting push of morning flight brought many warblers through the area. Mid-morning kettles of Bald Eagles and Broad-winged Hawks followed after the songbirds tapered off. A total of 61 bird species were observed today! HAWK RIDGE TRAILS : HAWK RIDGE BIRD OBSERVATORY the intersection with the Amity Trail (Blue) and is known as the best way to reach one of our most popular hawk watching sites on the Ridge Loop (Yellow) called Summit Ledges. This trail continues along the top of the ridge over an area called Middle Knob. This high point is a nice place to stop and take in a great panoramic view of LakeSuperior.

Enjoying his life-long passion for birds, he is a professional bird guide. John joined the Hawk Ridge staff in 2016 and has worked in both the Count Interpreter and Count Director roles. Visitors and counters were treated to eye-level views of Bald Eagles and Broad-winged Hawks just barely beyond the drop off. Today's flight of birds along the West Skyline Hawk Count was pretty diverse, topped with several newly-arrived species. The morning flight started off with over 1,200 Blue Jays, nine species of beautiful warblers (several were first-of-the-year for the count), a dapper male Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and more. As the day progressed we were treated to close views of Broad-winged Hawks, speedy Merlin, swirling flocks of Chimney Swifts, and a Gray Ghost (adult male Northern Harrier) at the end of the day.
