HARS PARKES AVIATION MUSEUM Parkes has been used as a storage facility for the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society since 1975 and is currently being transformed into an aviation museum in its own right by a range of local and HARS volunteers. CONSOLIDATED PBY-6A CATALINA HARS A24-362 VH-PBZ The HARS PBY-6A is an amphibian (with retractable wheels), but once in flight with wheels retracted, it resembles the original ‘Black Cats’ very closely. The aircraft markings selected are those of A24-362 which served with 43 Squadron RAAF as OX-V. This aircraft was flown by HARS member Rees Hughes. CAC CA-27 AVON SABRE JET FIGHTER RAAF HARS Our aircraft (A94-901) was the first Sabre in RAAF service in July 1954. It was actually the second Avon Sabre built just after the prototype. A94-901 served with various RAAF Squadrons and was part of the 76 Squadron RAAF Black Panthers Aerobatic Team from 1961 to 1965 based at Williamtown. HASTINGS DEERING AIR STAIRS HARS FORD ANGLIA FALCON HARS has three of these Air Stairs which came in a 4 cylinder Ford Anglia engine version and a larger 6 cylinder Ford Falcon engine version. The stairs could extend from a Minimum of 8 ft up to a maximum height of 12 ft 10 ins. Despite their different approaches, these three aircraft were very close in over-all performance. It is interesting to note that DOUGLAS C-47 DAKOTA A65-94 VH-EAF Douglas C-47 Dakota A65-94 VH-EAF. A65-94 was built in Oklahoma city as a C-47B-30-DK and was delivered to the USAF on 20 April 1945 registered as 44-76774. The aircraft was then delivered to the RAAF on 2 May 1945 as A65-94 with a domestic registration of ‘VH-RFK’ and served in 38, 36 and then 34 Squadrons. LOCKHEED P2H (P2V-7) NEPTUNE ANT-SUBMARINE HARS Four engine military maritime reconnaissance, patrol and anti-submarine aircraft History The Lockheed Neptune was the first aircraft designed for long range, maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare tasks. Whilst its development started shortly before Pearl Harbour, low development priority meant that its first flight did not happen until May 1945. Prior to its appearance, aircraft designed for WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH THE HARS 707? John Travolta has donated his former QANTAS 707 to the HARS Aviation Museum. He is expected to participate in the delivery to Wollongong and hand over of the aircraft on a date yet to be set. At this time, November 2019 is targeted subject to securing approvals from Australian, USA and en-route regulatory authorities, and AUSTER J5G AUTOCAR HARS NAVY Single engine touring/liaison History of Type A British-built four-seater touring/liaison aircraft. Designed just after WW11. First flown in September 1949. The RAN purchased 2 Autocars in 1949 and these arrived in Australia from Britain on board the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney. They were retired in late 1963. The first DC-4 flew in early 1942. The RAN purchased 2 Autocars in 1949 and these arrived in Australia from Britain on board the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney. They were retired in late 1963. Originally designed by Sydney brothers Allan, William and Jack Clancy, the Skybaby first took to the air in February 1931. There were new large aircraft that needed more powerful and economical engines. Three engine manufacturers were looking at these new requirements. General Electric started DASSAULT CAC CA-29 MIRAGE III SUPERSONIC JET FIGHTER BOMBER By TSGT Curt Eddings Introduction The “Fifties” saw the intensification of the “Cold War” and during that decade the Mirage III came to life, one of several “classic” fighter designs including the F-104 and Mig 21. Despite their different approaches, these three aircraft were very close in over-all performance. It is interesting to note that DOUGLAS C-47 DAKOTA A65-94 VH-EAF Douglas C-47 Dakota A65-94 VH-EAF. AUSTER J5G AUTOCAR HARS NAVY Single engine touring/liaison History of Type A British-built four-seater touring/liaison aircraft. Designed just after WW11. First flown in September 1949. The RAN purchased 2 Autocars in 1949 and these arrived in Australia from Britain on board the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney. They were retired in late 1963. The engine is inverted (upside down) to get ROLLS ROYCE RB211 TURBOFAN JET AERO ENGINE HARS Three shaft hi–bypass turbofan engine The RB211 Story During the mid-sixties, both aircraft and engine manufacturers were in the process of updating their products from those of the initial jet era. There were new large aircraft that needed more powerful and economical engines. Three engine manufacturers were looking at these new requirements. General Electric started GENERAL DYNAMICS F-111C Introduction The F111 is a truly special aircraft and the story of how it came to be is a fascinating and wonderful lesson of mixing dreams, ego, politics, engineering, and in some cases tragedy. Like many things in history, the F-111 project came into existence because of several threads and the appointment of particular people PARKES AVIATION MUSEUM The Parkes Aviation Museum is located at the end of Muzycuk Drive at Parkes Airport.
