Bournes Give Combined Total of 30 Years to Serving Special Needs Relocating after retirement sometimes brings the mindset to not become too overly involved in community volunteer activities. That was definitely not the case with Lyn and Maryanne Bourne when they moved to McCormick in October, 2000. It wasn’t very long after their move to Savannah Lakes Village that they began reaching out within their new community, whether it be in their church – McCormick United Methodist Church – in area schools – such as the children’s home at John de la Howe School – or in civic organizations – such as the McCormick Lions Club. You did not generally find them in the limelight as they preferred to serve others quietly and without public notice. One organization that really stole their hearts was the Burton Center for Disabilities and Special Needs that provides services to over 1,000 people in McCormick and five surrounding counties. At the time of his death last year in late October, Lyn was serving a second term as Board Chairman. He also served in a variety of other leadership positions during his 17 year service on the board.Tue, Jun 01, 2021

Announcing Nancy Corley’s Retirement from Hospice & Palliative Careof the Piedmont
Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont Board of Directors is announcing that Nancy Corley will be retiring at the end of the year. She has led the organization as its President and CEO for 32 years. In 1989 when Nancy started at Hospice, there were 4 employees and about a dozen volunteers. There were also less than 10 hospices in the state of South Carolina. The organization was located in loaned office space at the Self Memorial Hospital Personnel Residence and totally reliant on donations to fund care. The community non-profit, which is celebrating 40 years of service to the area, has developed into one of the most successful hospice organizations in the state. In 1998, the program re-located to its current location in Greenwood on West Alexander Avenue in the Medical District. Throughout her tenure, Nancy has been recognized and active in both state and national hospice efforts. She was one of the first hospice administrators to be certified in SC. She feels Hospice has truly been her passion for over30 years.

For Smith, ‘Lander Is Home and Family and Purpose’ During Lander University’s spring commencement exercises, held on Tuesday, May 11, Baptist Collegiate Minister Scott Smith received an honorary degree from the university that he has called home for 36 years. "Yours has been a life dedicated to enriching the lives of those around you,” Lander Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Linda Dolny said to Smith during the announcement of the award. "In your role as Baptist Collegiate Minister, you have acted as pastor, counselor, advocate, teacher and friend to thousands of individuals on the Lander campus and far beyond,” Dolny said. She said it was a "great privilege” to confer upon Smith the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. It’s not the first time that Lander has acknowledged its indebtedness to Smith. In 2008, he was awarded the Lander Medallion of Honor, reserved for members of the community who have dedicated their time, talents, energy and personal resources to improving Lander. "Today, more than a decade later, you continue to serve as an inspiration to all those who seek to leave the world a better place than they found it,” Dolny said. A native of Pendleton, Smith was commissioned to the ministry by First Baptist Church of Pendleton in 1973. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Furman University in 1977, and a master’s degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1979. Before beginning work at Lander, on June 1, 1985, he served for four years as director of Baptist Campus Ministry at Baptist College, now Charleston Southern University, and also directed the Baptist Campus Ministry at The Citadel. Along with his work at Lander, Smith has led several ambitious mission trips, including one to Boston, Mass., to work with AIDS patients, and another one to New Orleans, La., to help with relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina. For 29 years after coming to Greenwood, he was assisted by his wife, Judy, who died in 2014. "The students used to love watching how Judy and I reacted to each other,” he told The Baptist Courier in 2017. "They loved Judy.” He was tested again by COVID-19. When campus closed in March 2020, the BCM responded by going virtual, meeting with students every Thursday to maintain contact and offer encouragement. When campus reopened last August, Smith and BCM Assistant Director Katie Troutmann began holding meetings and services outdoors in the parking lot. In the fall, they moved things back indoors, rearranging rooms for activities such as small group Bible studies to allow for social distancing. According to Smith, students today have more serious problems than those of the past, with severe depression, feelings of disconnectedness and thoughts of suicide heading the list. Today it’s "so much different,” he says. He keeps in touch with students after they leave Lander, and they keep in touch with him. He has officiated in more than 130 weddings. "I have participated with other ministers in a good many of these weddings. I have participated by doing vows, prayers and welcomes,” he said. A longtime member of South Main Street Baptist Church, Smith is the father of two Lander alumni — Cherry Lynne, who graduated in 2006, and Charles Thomas, who graduated two years later. Smith first learned that he had been chosen to receive an honorary degree in March, when he was summoned to Lander President Richard Cosentino’s office. "I was shocked,” he said. "Something like this never occurred to me, and frankly, I am not sure what I said. I just remember getting teary and trying to hold it together.” He said that he has "felt purpose and direction serving others at Lander. The relationships with students, faculty and staff, administrators, coaches, local churches and other ministers have been inspirational to me.” Lander, he said, has been "home and family andpurpose.”

Drew Pridgen named Lander's bass fishing head coach The Lander athletic department is pleased to announce the hiring of Drew Pridgen as the Bearcats' head bass fishing coach. Pridgen is a Greenwood native and a 2020 Lander graduate. Pridgen was a member of Lander's bass fishing team during his undergraduate career, also serving as the team's social media chair in 2018-19 and the program's vice president in 2019-20. Lander bass fishing will be competing as a varsity sport for the first time in the fall of 2021. "I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to lead my alma mater and help this up-and-coming program," said Pridgen. "This is a dream come true position and I can't wait to get to work. This team will be a force to be reckoned with and I am excited for the future of the program." Lander announced the addition of bass fishing to its athletics roster in March. Bass fishing has existed as a club sport at Lander since 2011. The Bearcats are currently ranked 26th nationally in the Bass Pro Shops School of the Year standings from the Association ofCollegiate Anglers.

Lander University hosts 2021 Highlander Battalion Spring Dining-Out Lander University hosted its first Highlander Battalion Dining-Out on Thursday, May 6. Cadets from the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) of Lander University, Newberry College and Presbyterian College, which comprise the Highlander Battalion, gathered on Lander’s campus to celebrate cadets’ accomplishments and efforts. Major Adrian Chen, assistant professor of military science, describes a dining-out as a "formal military dinner where civilians are invited to attend.” During the opening of the evening, Lander cadet and Cadet Battalion Commander Brian Murphy gave a brief history of the Military Dining Ceremony, describing how the close association between the British and American Army during the world wars led the United States Army to adopt the ceremony as part of its social program, and how it "flourished during World War II and became a regular social function.” "They recognized that the ceremony is an ideal forum in which to strengthen and perpetuate the spirit, professionalism and soul of the Army,” said CDT Murphy. In a lone corner under a spotlight was the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action table. The table and its components symbolize the dynamics of the realities for some soldiers that serve: a round table to show "everlasting” concern for those missing; the tablecloth is white to symbolize the purity of their motives; a red rose in a vase to remember the life of each of the missing, and their loved ones; the vase is tied with a red ribbon to symbolize continued determination to account for the missing; a lemon slice on a bread plate to remember the fate of those captured and missing in foreign lands; a pinch of salt for the tears endured by those missing and their families; an inverted glass represents their inability to share in the evening’s toast; and an empty chair to remember those who can’t be with their fellow servicemembers. Special guests and members of the head table included Dr. Richard and Mrs. Jessica Cosentino, president and first lady of Lander; Brigadier General John T. Gentry, Jr., Presbyterian College alumni; Dr. Anna-Bradley Schoenfeld, major gifts officer for Presbyterian College, and her husband, Mr. Thomas Schoenfeld; Dr. Sid Parrish, vice president for Academic Affairs, and his wife, Mrs. Julie Parrish. Instructors, cadets and guests were served dinner and desert, which was followed by a brief awards ceremony. Cadets ended the evening learning by their new roles in the Highlander Battalion’s Cadet Battalion Staff. Awards and recipients: Military Order of the World Wars: Gold: CDT Charles Alexander, Presbyterian College Silver: CDT Bricelin Balcer, Lander University Bronze: CDT Torrence Nelson, Newberry College This award is in recognition of cadets who demonstrated outstanding performance in the ROTC program. Reserve Officers Association Award: Gold: CDT Logan Ellis, Lander University Silver: CDT Payton Hibler, Presbyterian College Bronze: CDT Laura Layton, Newberry College This award is in recognition of cadets who embody Army values and display high nationalism in the ROTC program. Upset patient threatens Doctor This morning around 9 a.m., Greenwood County Deputies responded to Lakelands Orthopaedic Associates of the Lakelands after a patient makes a threat to harm a doctor. George Michael Osborn was arrested and charged with Assault and Battery 3rd degree. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the patient had an injury and being evaluated by a doctor. The doctor told the patient that he could not do anything for that injury causing the patient to become irate. The patient then pointed his finger like a gun at the doctor and said if he couldn’t help him, he would be back and get him. This apparently led doctors and staff to believe the patient was coming back into the office possible with a gun. Lakelands Orthopaedic Associates of the Lakelands is located on Gregor Mendel Circle in Greenwood SC.Tue, May 18, 2021
Lander University confers degrees to Class of 2021 in 163rdcommencement
GREENWOOD, S.C. -- A researcher who has worked on a team of scientists studying the COVID-19 vaccine and a mayor who led his community through the pandemic offered advice to graduates at Lander University’s 163rd commencement ceremonies Tuesday (May 11). Lander University alumna Dr. Brenda Kapingidza, who spoke at Lander’s 9 a.m. and noon ceremonies, called on graduates to "make sure you maintain your identity and have a clear vision of where you want to be.” Greenwood Mayor Brandon Smith, who spoke at the 3 p.m. ceremony, said that the past 14 months have shown everyone that they cannot take "any of your human experiences for granted.” The University, which awarded bachelor’s and master’s degrees to about 377 graduates, divided the commencement exercises into three ceremonies to keep the number of graduates, employees and guests in the Finis Horne Arena to safe levels. Each ceremony, which limited graduates to five guests, was conducted in accordance with public health and government guidelines, including social distancing and mask requirements, as well as temperature screenings for all participants and attendees. Kapingidza, who studied at Lander through the Dr. Douglas and Jean Mufuka scholarship program, shared her story of growing up in Zimbabwe and realizing at an early age that she wanted to pursue a medical-related field of study. As one of eight children, Kapingidza believed college was impossible. But the generosity of the Mufuka family led to the realization of her educational dreams, which extended beyond Lander to the University of South Carolina where she earned a doctoral degree. In June 2020, she joined scientists at the Duke Human Vaccine Institute, which has been studying the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV02, associated with COVID-19. "I can attest that my journey was filled with so many obstacles, but I remained resolute,” she said, referencing her discovery that her original desire to study organic compounds wasn’t what she wanted to do. Kapingidza switched focus areas – something almost unheard of in doctoral studies – and found her passion in studying biochemistry with a specialization in molecular immunology. The scientist admitted she wanted to quit because she was unprepared for the doctoral program she wanted to pursue. Her path to success, however, was guided by the words of the headmistress of her high school in Zimbabwe. The school leader’s mantra became Kapingidza’s lesson for life, "Whenever I found myself in doubt … I always repeated it. ‘Who am I, where am I going to, and how do I get there?’ This mantra keeps me grounded.” For graduate Learnmore Jeremia, also of Zimbabwe, the ceremony was especially poignant. Jeremia, a chemistry major, received the Thayer Award, the University’s highest academic honor. Kapingidza was a mentor to him throughout his undergraduate education. "She has so inspired me,” he said. "I know that I will want to be a mentor to others as she has been to me.” The desire to pursue an education, regardless of obstacles, wasn’t lost on graduate Rosalind Carrell Sanchez. She refused to give up her dream of a college education – a quest that was 16 years in the making. The 34-year-old Army veteran served eight years on military bases throughout the United States, South Korea and Iraq and three years in the U.S. Army Reserves. Although she joined the military to defray college costs, the Army’s numerous assignments hampered her educational efforts. Settling in Edgefield County after active duty service, she chose Lander for her education and became a mother during her academic journey to become a nurse. The new Lander-graduate will join Self Regional Medical Center as an emergency room nurse. "I can work with people of all ages and all areas of life. The ER is the gateway between the community and the facility. I’ll be able to focus on community health, something I am very passionate about,” she said. Lander faculty member Dr. Farha Ali shared the joy of graduation with students whom she taught and as a member of the Class of 2021 herself. Ali, who already has a master’s degree and a Ph.D., earned a master’s degree in management. "I am a lifelong learner,” said Ali. "Although I am in computing, I wanted to learn how organizations run. When the opportunity to pursue this master’s degree became available to me, I was interested. It will give me a new perspective for some areas of my classes.” Brandon Smith, an attorney, said he wrote in a fifth-grade essay that he wanted to be Greenwood’s mayor. At the time, he didn’t live in the city limits "or have any idea about the role of leadership.” But the role of being the city’s leader does not define him, he said, as the graduates’ own accomplishments and mistakes will not define them "as long as your heart is in the right place.” Just as the graduates are looking forward to the next steps in their lives, Smith said he is looking ahead to the city’s life after 14 months of pandemic uncertainty. "Life involves a lot of improvisation,” he said, noting that those best equipped to handle change will be successful throughout their lives. Honors College graduate Caroline Holubek is an example of Smith’s message of improvisation. She returned to Greenwood from Spain when her study-abroad experience was upended by the pandemic. With time on her hands beyond her studies, Holubek began helping a local children’s clothing business, The Frilly Frog, with its online marketing needs. The company’s business has grown about 150 percent over the past year. Holubek graduated in only three years from Lander with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and another bachelor’s degree in Spanish – proof that even a pandemic doesn’t have to result in failure. "My work has been part of this business’ success story,” said Holubek, who will join the staff of the Greenville-based company, Southern Tide, as a marketing coordinator in two weeks. "My work has been gratifying and a wonderful experience.” Among the degrees conferred, Lander University presented an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree to Scott Smith, chaplain of Lander’s Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM). Smith, a native of Pendleton, joined the BCM in 1985 and has been a loyal mentor and minister to the campus’ students, faculty and staff for more than three decades.Wed, May 12, 2021

Piedmont Tech Graduates Receive Respective Accolades as Teachers ofthe Year
In a profession where surprises occasionally can come in unwanted, occasionally messy forms, three Piedmont Technical College (PTC) Early Care and Education graduates recently have been on the receiving end of the very best “gotcha” moments. They have been recognized as Teachers of the Year for their respective schools and/or school districts. Karla Lopez, a 2018 PTC graduate who transferred to Lander University to continue her education, has been named a Greenwood School District 50 First Year Teacher of the Year. She teaches English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at Mathews Elementary School. She did not see the recognition coming. “I was overjoyed. I wasn’t expecting it,” Lopez said. “There are so many amazing first-year teachers at our school!” Another surprise was that, while Lopez expected to teach only the earliest learners, she instead landed in a position teaching ESOL to 1st, 4th and 5th graders. “At first, I wasn’t sure about it,” she said. “I thought I wanted to be a mainstream teacher, but I have really loved the experience.” In fact, she now intends to specialize in ESOL and is pursuing her master’s in ESOL, which she hopes to achieve by February 2022.Mon, May 10, 2021

Computer Technology Instructor Named Innovator of the Year at PTC He wasn’t even born when lean operating practices came into vogue, but Henry Ecker has led several successful lean initiatives at Piedmont Technical College (PTC) and distinguished himself among his colleagues as a game-changer and problem-solver. His achievements in the brief few years the computer technology instructor has been with the college have earned him the title of Innovator of the Year at PTC. In addition to contributing his insights and ideas while serving on multiple working committees and the Faculty Senate, Ecker has offered instructional assistance beyond his own classroom when needed. “The only thing more amazing than Henry’s wealth of knowledge is the freedom and willingness at which he shares that knowledge,” said Jason White, PTC electronic engineering technology instructor. “He’s not even in my division, and he has made a positive impact on our program and our students’ education.”More__

Barfield Wins Young Faculty Scholar Award Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Exercise Science Dr. Jeff Barfield, the newest winner of Lander University’s Young Faculty Scholar Award, was a pitcher in college. As he puts it, “I was able to take my interest from playing and carry that into academia.” As a pitcher, Barfield was interested in what he could do to improve his performance on the mound, and after suffering two elbow injuries, he developed an interest in injury avoidance, too, leading ultimately to his career as a specialist in upper extremity biomechanics. Barfield’s pitching career took off after a strong season at Lake City Community College, in Lake City, Fla., when he was offered a scholarship to study biology and play baseball for the University of Florida. He was a member of the Florida baseball team that won the Southeastern Conference East Division title in 2009. Following his senior campaign in 2010, when the Gators won the SEC championship and played in the College World Series, he was offered a contract by the Detroit Tigers. He pitched for two years in the minor leagues before being released by the Tigers during spring training in2012.
